Nunavut, which comprises what was formerly the eastern portion of Northwest Territories, is primarily inhabited and controlled by the Inuit. It officially became a new territory of Canada on April 1, 1999. Iqaluit, at the head of Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island, is the capital.
