Ultimately from Hebrewbut transmitted to English probably by way of Medieval Latin and French, cabal is first recorded in English in 1616 in the sense "cabala.” Cabala was the name for the Hebrew oral tradition transmitted by Moses and also the name for a Jewish religious philosophy based on an esoteric interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures. The notion "esoteric" is central to the development of this word in English, forcabal, probably following the sense development in French, came to mean "a tradition, special interpretation, or secret,” "a private intrigue" (first recorded in 1646-1647),and "a small body of intriguers" (first recorded in 1660).It is probably not coincidental thatcabal is found with these latter meanings during the mid-17th century, that time of plots and counterplots by Royalists and Parliamentarians. The word gained a false etymology when it was noticed that the five most influential ministers of Charles II were named Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley, and Lauderdale. 使犯错误:使失误,诱导某人犯错误或抓住某人的前后不一致〔discordance〕The state or an instance of disagreement; discord.不协调,不一致:冲突的例子或状态;不协调〔baroque〕Marked by rich and sometimes bizarre or incongruous ornamentation.See Synonyms at ornate 标新立异的:有丰富且有时离奇或不一致的装饰的 参见 ornate〔difference〕A cause of a disagreement or controversy.意见分歧的原因:不一致或有争议的原因〔discord〕Tension or strife resulting from a lack of agreement; dissension.不调和:由于不一致而造成了不和、争论;争议〔difference〕The quality or condition of being unlike or dissimilar.不同,相异:性质或条件上的不相同或不一致〔demoralize〕an inconsistent policy that demoralized the staff.使工作人员泄气的前后不一致的政策〔strange〕The kitchen was redolent with the peculiar aromatic odor of cloves. Something that isodd fails to accord with what is ordinary, usual, or expected, while somethingqueer deviates markedly from the norm; both terms can suggest strangeness or peculiarity: 厨房充满了特殊的丁香气味。 Odd 形容与普通、平常的或预料不一致的某物。 Queer 形容与标准或正常有很大差别的事物。 但两个词都能表示奇异或特殊: 〔inconsistent〕Not in agreement or harmony; incompatible:不一致的或不协调的;不相容的:〔misunderstanding〕A disagreement or quarrel.争执:不一致或争吵〔disharmony〕Lack of harmony; discord.不协调;不和谐,不一致〔or〕Other grammarians, however, have argued that such constructions must be avoided and that substitutes be found in which the problem of agreement does not arise: 但是,另有些语法学家却主张避免使用这种结构而使用不发生主谓不一致问题的替代结构: 〔disconformity〕Refusal or failure to conform; nonconformity.不一致;不符合〔anacoluthon〕from Late Greek anakolouthon [inconsistency in logic] 源自 后期希腊语 anakolouthon [逻辑上不一致] 〔discord〕To fail to agree or harmonize; clash.不一致,不协调;冲突〔wrong〕Not in conformity with fact or truth; incorrect or erroneous.错的,错误的:与事实与真相不一致的;不正确的或错误的〔but〕Traditional grammarians have worried over what form the pronoun ought to take whenbut is used to indicate an exception in sentences such as No one but I (or No one but me ) has read it. Some have argued thatbut is a conjunction in these sentences and therefore should be followed by the nominative formI. However, many of these grammarians have gone on to argue somewhat inconsistentlythat the accusative formme is appropriate when the but phrase occurs at the end of a sentence, as inNo one has read it but me. While this treatment of the construction has a considerable weight of precedent on its sideand cannot be regarded as incorrect,a strong case can be made on grammatical grounds for treating this use ofbut as a preposition. For one thing, ifbut were truly a conjunction here, we would expect the verb to agree in person and number with the noun or pronoun followingbut; we would then sayNo one but the students have read it. What is more, ifbut were a true conjunction here we would not expect that it could be moved to the end of a clause, as inNo one has read it but the students. Note that we cannot use the conjunctionand in a similar way, saying John left and everyone else in the class in place of John and everyone else in the class left. These observations suggest thatbut is best considered as a preposition here and followed by accusative forms such asme and them in all positions: No one but me has read it. No one has read it but me. These recommendations are supported by 73 percent of the Usage Panel when thebut phrase precedes the verb and by 93 percent when thebut phrase follows the verb. · But is redundant when used together with however, as in But the army, however, went on with its plans; one or the other word should be eliminated. ·But is generally not followed by a comma. Correct written style requiresKim wanted to go, but we stayed, not Kim wanted to go, but, we stayed. · But may be used to begin a sentence at all levels of style. See Usage Note at and ,cannot ,doubt ,however ,I 1传统的语法学家考虑当but 用于表示例外的意思时应该用什么形式的代词,比如 No one but I (或者 No one but me ) has read it 。 有人认为but 在这种句子中是个连词, 因此应该使用主格I。 然而许多语法学家接下来的讨论有些不一致,即当but 短语出现在句子末尾时用宾格 me 比较合适, 如No one has read it but me(除我以外没有人读过它)。 同时这种结构前置处理的重要性是值得考虑的,并且不会被认为是不正确的,一个有力的例子在语法范畴内,认为but 在这里作介词使用。 首先如果but 在此真是一个连词的话, 我们会期望同名词或代词在人称和数上保持一致的动词跟在but 后面; 我们会说No one but the students have read it(除学生以外没有人读过它)。 再者,如果but 在此真是连词的话,我们不希望它被放在句子末尾, 如在句子No one has read it but the students 中。 注意我们不以类似的方式来使用连词and ,说 John left and everyone else in the class 来代替 John and everyone else in the class left。 这些发现表明but 在此最好被当作介词, 在任何位置后面都应跟宾格形式如me 和 them : No one but me has read it. No one has read it but me(除了我没人读过它)。 当but 短语放在动词之前时,有百分之七十三的用法专题使用小组成员支持这些提议; 而当but 短语放在动词之后时,得到百分之九十三的小组成员的支持。 But 在同 however 一起使用时是多余的,如 But the army, however, went on with its plans; 这两个词必须去掉其中一个。But 通常后面不加逗号。 正确的写法是Kim wanted to go, but we stayed, 而不是 Kim wanted to go, but, we stayed 。 But 可以放在所有文体标准的句子开头 参见 and,cannot,doubt,however,I1〔difference〕A disagreement or controversy.意见分歧:不一致或有争议〔incoherent〕Lacking cohesion, connection, or harmony; not coherent:前后不一致的,不连贯的:缺少凝聚性、连贯性或协调性的;不一致的:〔discrepancy〕An instance of divergence or disagreement.See Synonyms at difference 矛盾之处:不相符之处,不一致的例子 参见 difference〔unequal〕Not even or consistent; variable.不均匀的或不一致的;变化的〔dissonant〕Being at variance; disagreeing.不协调的;不一致的〔improper〕Not consistent with established truth, fact, or rule; incorrect.错误的,不正确的:与既定真相、事实或原则不一致的;错误的〔anomalous〕from Greek [uneven] 源自 希腊语 [不一致的,不相等的] 〔inconsistency〕The state or quality of being inconsistent.前后不一致,矛盾:不一致的情形或品质〔discrepant〕from Latin discrepāns discrepant- [present participle of] discrepāre [to disagree] 源自 拉丁语 discrepāns discrepant- discrepāre的现在分词 [不符合,不一致] 〔synesis〕A construction in which a form, such as a pronoun, differs in number but agrees in meaning with the word governing it, as inIf the group becomes too large, we can split them in two. 意义正确但不合语法规则的句子结构:意义相合但数与支配该词,如代词的词不一致的结构,如在句子If the group becomes too large, we can split them in two 中 〔schizophrenia〕the schizophrenia of the double espionage agent.双重间谍的不一致〔wild〕Deviating greatly from an intended course; erratic:远离目标的:与期望目标偏离很远的;不一致的:〔irony〕Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs:讽刺意味:可能被期望的与实际发生的情况间的不一致:〔cowlick〕A projecting tuft of hair on the head that grows in a different direction from the rest of the hair and will not lie flat.反毛:头上翘着的一绺头发,与其他头发的方向不一致且不易压平〔alien〕Dissimilar, inconsistent, or opposed, as in nature:相异的,不相容的:性质上不同、不一致或对立的:〔anacoluthon〕An abrupt change within a sentence to a second construction inconsistent with the first, sometimes used for rhetorical effect; for example,I warned him that if he continues to drink, what will become of him? 改变说法;错格:句子中与第一个语法结构不一致的突然出现的第二个结构,有时用于修辞效果;例如,我警告过他,如果他继续喝酒的话将会有什么下场呢? |
