单词 | 不明确 |
释义 | 〔meaning〕The import of his statement is ambiguous.他的叙述意思不明确。〔various〕Various is sometimes used as a pronoun, as inHe spoke to various of the members. It is not clear why this usage should be regarded as an error, since it is supported by analogy to the uses of quantifiers such asfew, many, and several. But it has occasioned widespread critical objections;in an earlier survey the usage was found unacceptable by 91 percent of the Usage Panel.Various 有时用做代词, 如在他和成员中的好几个人谈过话。 因为,对数量词如few, many 和 several 的用法的类推支持这种用法,所以为什么这种用法被看做是一种错误就不明确了。 但是也遇到不同的广泛流传的批评性的反对,在一次早期调查中发现,用法专题使用小组的百分之九十一的成员对此用法不予接受〔hedge〕An intentionally noncommittal or ambiguous statement.暧昧的回答,故意的不信任:故意说得模棱两可的话,不明确的话〔equal〕In the first example, deleteequally; in the second, deleteas. The solution to this usage problem usually involvesusingas alone when a comparison is explicit andequally alone when it is not. See Usage Note at as 1center ,parallel ,perfect ,unique 在第一个例子中,可以删掉equally ; 在第二个例子中,删掉as 。 对这种错误用法的解决方法往往在于:当被比较的事物很明确时,单独使用as ; 当被比较的事物不明确时,单独使用equally 参见 as1center,parallel,perfect,unique〔provoke〕 Provoke, the least explicit with respect to means, frequently does little more than state the consequences produced: Provoke 在方式上最不明确,通常仅仅指明所产生的后果: 〔dark〕"The path was altogether indiscernible in the murky darkness which surrounded them" (Sir Walter Scott).Figuratively it can imply dark vagueness: “这条小径被围绕在漆黑中难以辨别” (沃尔特·斯科特爵士)。它能象征性地暗示不明确、朦胧模糊: 〔ambiguity〕Doubtfulness or uncertainty as regards interpretation:含糊不清;不明确:解释有疑问或不确定:〔syphilis〕In 1530 Girolamo Fracastoro, a physician, astronomer, and poet of Verona, published a poem entitled "Syphilis, sive Morbus Gallicus,” translated as "Syphilis, or the French Disease.” In Fracastoro's poem the name of this dreaded venereal disease is an altered form of the hero's name,Syphilus. The hero, a shepherd, is supposed to have been the first victim of the disease. Where the nameSyphilus itself came from is not known for certain, but it has been suggested that Fracastoro borrowed the name from Ovid'sMetamorphoses. In Ovid's work Sipylus (spelledSiphylus in some manuscripts) is the oldest son of Niobe, who lived not far from Mount Sipylon in Asia Minor.Fracastoro's poem about Syphilus was modeled on the story of Niobe.Although the etymology involving Sipylus was known to the editors of theOxford English Dictionary, it was not accepted as their last word on the subject.C.T. Onions, one of the dictionary's editors, writing in theOxford Dictionary of English Etymology, says that “ Syphilus [the shepherd's name] is of unkn[own] origin.” Fracastoro went on to use the termsyphilis again in his medical treatise De Contagione, published in 1546. The word that Fracastoro used in Latin was eventually borrowed into English, being first recorded in 1718.1530年,吉罗拉莫·弗拉卡斯特罗,一位医生,天文学家,也是维罗纳的诗人,发表了名为"Syphius, sive Morbus Gallicus"的诗,译作“梅毒,或法国疾病”。
