单词 使用者
释义 〔crackhead〕A heavy user of crack cocaine.快克瘾君子:快克古柯碱的严重使用者〔shareware〕Copyrighted software that is available free of charge on a trial basis, usually with the condition that users pay a fee for continued use and support.共有软件:可免费试用的受版权保护的软件,若继续使用及获得支持,使用者通常要付费〔extranet〕An extension of an institution's intranet, especially over the World Wide Web, enabling communication between the institution and people it deals with, often by providing limited access to its intranet.外部网络:一种企业内部网络的延伸,尤其是指经由万维网,让利用该网络的企业及使用者得以藉此通讯,通常藉由提供使用者限制性使用企业内部网络的方式〔MUD〕A computer program, usually running over the Internet, that allows multiple users to participate in virtual-reality role-playing games.多位使用者区域:一种在网络上能让多位玩家同时参与虚拟角色扮演的程序〔ennui〕Were they alive today, users of Classical Latin might be surprised to find that centuries later a phrase of theirs would still survive, although in the form of a single word. The phrasemihi in odiō est (literally translated as "to me in a condition of dislike or hatred is"), meaning "I hate or dislike,” gave rise to the Vulgar Latin verb.inodiāre, "to make odious,” the source of Modern Frenchennuyer, "to annoy, bore.” In the Old French period a noun meaning "worry, boredom,” came from the verbennuier. This noun in its Modern French formennui was borrowed into English in the sense "boredom,” the English word being first recorded in 1732.People may have needed a word for boredom in the polite, cultivated world of the 18th century, but at an earlier period, around 1275,we had already borrowed the French verbennuier, the source of our word annoy. One of the earliest instances ofannoy in English is, in fact, used in the sense "to bore an audience.” annoy 在英语中最早的例子之一是它实际上是在“使观众厌倦”的意义上使用的 〔hisself〕Speakers of some vernacular American dialects, particularly in the South, may use the possessive reflexive formhisself instead of himself (as in He cut hisself shaving ) and theirselves or theirself for themselves (as in They found theirselves alone ). These forms reflect the tendency of speakers of vernacular dialects to regularize irregular patterns found in the corresponding standard variety. In Standard English, the pattern of reflexive pronoun forms shows slightly irregular patterning; all forms but two are composed of the possessive form of the pronoun and -self or -selves, as in myself or ourselves. The exceptions are himself and themselves, which are formed by attaching the suffix -self/-selves to the object forms of he and they rather than their possessive forms. Speakers who use hisself and theirselves are smoothing out the pattern's inconsistencies by applying the same rule to all forms in the set.·A further regularization is the use of -self regardless of number, yielding the forms ourself and theirself. Using a singular form in a plural context may seem imprecise, but the plural meaning of ourself and theirself is made clear by the presence of the plural forms our- and their-. Hisself and theirselves have origins in British English and are still prevalent today in vernacular speech in England. 一些美国本土方言的使用者,尤其是美国南方人,可能会用所有格的反身代词形式hisself 代替 himself (如 He cut hisself shaving﹝刮脸时他割到自己﹞ )以及 theirselves 或 theirself 代替 themselves (如 They found theirselves alone﹝他们发觉自己很孤独﹞ )。 Hisself 和 theirselves 起源于英式英语并在英国本土语言中依然流行 〔fool〕The pejorative nature of the termfool is only strengthened by a knowledge of its etymology. Its source, the Latin wordfollis, meant "a bag or sack, a large inflated ball, a pair of bellows.” Users of the word in Late Latin, however, saw a resemblance between the bellows or the inflated ball and a person who was what we would call "a windbag" or "an airhead.”The word, which passed into English by way of French,is first recorded in English in a work written around the beginning of the 13th centurywith the sense "a foolish, stupid, or ignorant person.”词语fool 的轻蔑性质只有用它的语源知识才能体会深刻。 它的词源,拉丁词fillis 意思是“一个袋子,一个大的充气球,一对风箱”。 然而在后期拉丁语中此词使用者发现一个风箱或充气球与一个我们称为“空谈者”或“自大者”之间有相似之处。这个词通过法语传入英语,在英语中最早记录在一本写于大约为13世纪初的书中,意思是“笨的,傻的或愚昧的人”〔tattoo〕The practice of tattooing the body is prehistoric, but the English wordtattoo was introduced fairly recently. Our word came from Polynesian languages such as Tahitian and Samoanand was introduced to English speakers by the explorer Capt. James Cook (who also gave us the wordtaboo ). The earliest use of the verbtattoo in English is found in 1769 in his account of a voyage around the world from 1768 to 1771. Cook also used a noun in his writings of 1769but treated it as a native wordso he is not given credit for the first use of the noun in English (recorded in 1777).In any event, sailors introduced the custom into Europe from the Pacific societies in which it was practiced, and it has remained associated with sailors, although many other people have tattoos as well. 但不管怎样,是水手们将这种原本是太平洋岛屿社会中的习俗带入欧洲的,所以直到今天这种做法仍然和水手们联系在一起,虽然各种职业的人们都在身上刺花纹〔GUI〕An interface for issuing commands to a computer utilizing a pointing device, such as a mouse, that manipulates and activates graphical images on a monitor.图片使用者界面:利用某种指示设备对计算机发出指令的一种界面,例如鼠标,可以操纵并启动屏幕上的图片影像〔sneak〕Snuck is an Americanism first introduced in the 19th century as a nonstandard regional variant ofsneaked. But widespread use ofsnuck has become more common with every generation. It is now used by educated speakers in all regions, and there is some evidence to suggest that it is more frequent among younger speakers thansneaked is. Formal written English is naturally and properly more conservative than other varieties, of course, and heresnuck still meets with much resistance. Many writers and editors have a lingering unease about the form, particularly if they recall its nonstandard origins. In fact, our consolidated citations, exhibiting almost 10,000 instances ofsneaked and snuck, indicate thatsneaked is preferred by a factor of 7 to 2. And 67 percent of the Usage Panel disapproves ofsnuck. Nevertheless, in recent yearssnuck has been quietly establishing itself in formal writing. An electronic search of a wide range of reputable publications turns up hundreds of citations forsnuck, not just in sports writingbut in news columns and commentary: Snuck 对一系列著名出版物的电子扫描调查显示出几百处使用snuck 的地方, 而且不光是在体育文章中,在新闻专栏和评论中也有使用: 〔ferry〕To deliver (a vehicle, especially an aircraft) under its own power to its eventual user.送交:将(交通工具,尤指飞机)借助其本身的力量交付给最终的使用者〔Telugu〕Of or relating to Telugu, its speakers, or their culture.泰卢固的:属于或关于泰卢固语,泰卢固语使用者或他们的文化的〔genteelism〕A word or an expression thought by its user to be more refined than another, as inexpectorate for spit. 雅语:使用者认为是比别的更为高雅的词或表达方式,例如用 expectorate 代替 spit. 〔belfry〕The wordsbell and belfry seem obviously related, but in fact thebel- portion of belfry had nothing to do with bells until comparatively recently. Belfry goes back to a compound formed in prehistoric Common Germanic. It is generally agreed that the second part of this compound is the element.frij-, meaning "peace, safety.” The first element is either.bergan, "to protect,” which would yield a compound meaning "a defensive place of shelter,” or.berg-, "a high place,” which would yield a compound meaning "a high place of safety, tower.”Whatever the meaning of the original Germanic source, its Old French descendantberfrei, which first meant "siege tower,” came to mean "watchtower.” Presumably because bells were used in these towers, the word was applied to bell towers as well. The Old North French alterationbelfroi, which reminded English speakers of their native word belle (our bell ), entered Middle English with the sense "bell tower,” first recorded in 1272.bell 和 belfry 这两个词似乎显著相关, 但事实上直到最近,belfry 词里的 bel 部分才同“钟”这个词联系起来。 belfroi 作为古北法语的变体它使英语使用者想到了自己的母语中 belle 一字(我们写做 bell ), 进入中古英语后意为“钟楼”,首次记载于1272年〔Windows〕A trademark for any of a series of GUIs or GUI-based computer operating systems.窗口:一个商标,在任何连串图形使用者接口或是接口计算机的操作系统〔interlanguage〕The type of language produced by nonnative speakers in the process of learning a second language or foreign language.人工辅助语言:一种由非本族语使用者在学习第二语言或外语的过程中形成的语言〔transpire〕Transpire has been used since the mid-18th century in the sense "leak out, become publicly known,” as inDespite efforts to hush the matter up, it soon transpired that the colonels had met with the rebel leaders. This usage was objected to as a Gallicism when it was first introducedbut has long been standard. The more common use oftranspire to mean "occur" or "happen" has had a more troubled history.Though it dates at least to the beginning of the 19th century,it has been the object of critical opprobrium for more than a hundred years, charged with being both pretentious and unetymological. There is some signthat resistance to this sense oftranspire is abating, however. In a 1969 survey the usagewas acceptable only to 38 percent of the Usage Panel;in the most recent surveyit was acceptable to 58 percent in the sentenceAll of these events transpired after last week's announcement (though many of the Panelists who accepted the usage also remarked that it was pretentious or pompous).Transpire 在最近进行的一次调查中,有58%的人认为象在所有这些事件都发生在上个星期的宣告之后 这样的句子中,这个词的用法是可以接受的 (许多接受这种用法的使用者也指出这种用法很矫柔造作)〔impact〕Each generation of critics seems to select one particular usage to stand as the emblem of what they view as linguistic crassness.Thirty years ago it was the use ofcontact as a verb, but opposition to that form has more or less disappeared, and attention now focuses on the verbal use ofimpact meaning "have an effect, affect.” Eighty-four percent of the Usage Panel disapproves of the constructionto impact on, as in the phrasesocial pathologies, common to the inner city, that impact heavily on such a community; and fully 95 percent disapproves of the use ofimpact as a transitive verb in the sentence Companies have used disposable techniques that have a potential for impacting our health. But even these figures do not reflect the degree of distaste with which critics view the usage:in their comments some Panelists labeled the usage as "bureaucratic,” "pretentious,” "vile,” and "a vulgarism.” ·It may be that the particular pretentiousness associated with the verbal use ofimpact is caused by its derivation from an already questionable metaphoric use of the noun impact, as in phrases such asthe political impact of the decision or the impact of the program on the community, in which no more is usually meant than might have been expressed by effects or consequences. But thoughimpact may have begun life a generation ago as an inflated substitute for "affect significantly,” it has by now become so common in corporate and institutional contexts that younger speakers appear to regard it as wholly standard and straightforward usage.Within a few years, accordingly, the usage is likely to be no more objectionable thancontact is now, since it will no longer betray any particular pretentiousness on the part of those who use it.See Usage Note at contact 相应地在几年内,这种用法很有可能不比今天的contact 更引起反对, 因为对于那些使用它的人来说这不会再显得有点矫揉造作了 参见 contact〔thirdhand〕Dealing in merchandise previously used by two other owners.三手经营:已被两个使用者用过的商品经营〔hosey〕Children in New England, especially in the Boston area, use the expressionI hosey when they are choosing sides for a game. TheBoston Globe asked readers about it in late 1987 and received responses from Boston; Belmont, Massachusetts; New Hampshire; and Maine. Its users agree that it is a children's expressionbut are unsure of its origin—some think that it derives from a pronunciation ofchoose with a heavy Irish brogue. Another possible origin of the expression is French-Canadianchoisir, "to choose.” 新英格兰,特别是波士顿地区的孩子们在进行一种游戏时,用我加入 表示选择加入哪一边来分组。 波士顿环球 杂志在1987年后半年时就此用语向其读者进行征询, 得到了波士顿地区、马萨诸塞州贝尔蒙特地区、新罕布什尔州及缅因州的读者的响应。此语使用者同意此语为孩童用语这一说法,但都不能确定其来源。有些读者认为其来自choose 这一词的带有浓重爱尔兰土腔的发音。 另一可能的词源是加拿大法语中choisir 一词“选择” 〔groupware〕Software that integrates work on a single project by several concurrent users at separated workstations.群体软件:能够同时使数字在不同工作站的使用者以单一计划将工作整合的软件〔should〕Herewould was acceptable on all levels to a large majority of the Usage Panel in an earlier survey and is more common in American usage thanshould. · Should have is sometimes incorrectly written should of by writers who have mistaken the source of the spoken contractionshould've. See Usage Note at if ,rather ,shall 在此处,在一次早期的调查中对大多数各阶层的使用者来说,would 是可以接受的, 且在美国用法中比should 更为常见。 有时书写者把should have 误拼成 should of , 因为他们把口头缩略形式should've的来源给弄错了 参见 if,rather, shall〔ferry〕A service and route for delivering an aircraft under its own power to its eventual user.飞机渡运:把飞机飞至交付最终使用者〔mailer〕large commercial mailers.大商业邮政使用者〔helicopter〕The origin of the wordhelicopter is apparent only upon due recognition of its Greek ancestors. Helicopter was borrowed from the French word hélicoptère, a word constructed from Greekheliko- and pteron, "wing.” Heliko- is a form of helix, "spiral,” that combines with other words and word forms to create new words. The consonant clusterpt in pteron begins many Greek words but relatively few English words,so English speakers who are unfamiliar with Greek do not think of the word's elements ashelico-pter. At least some English speakers have analyzed the word into the elementsheli-copter, as is shown by the clipped formcopter. 至少有的英语使用者已经把该词分析成了heli-copter , 正如缩写形式copter 所示那样 〔bewilder〕The wordbewilder is probably used much more commonly in its figurative sense "to confuse" than in its literal sense "to cause to lose one's bearings; disorient.” Yet the latter sense is most likely the clue to the original source of this word.Bewilder, first recorded in 1684, is made up of the prefix be-, here meaning "completely,” and the verb wilder, meaning "to cause to lose one's way,” first found in 1613. Wilder may in turn be a back-formation from wilderness, a much older word than wilder. Users of English might have erroneously thought thatwilderness was derived from an older verb wilder, which they then used with reference to the loss of one's way that can occur in a wilderness.单词bewilder 大概多用其比喻意义“使迷惑”,而少用其字面意义“使失去方向;使迷失方向”。 虽然后者更接近这个词的本意。Bewilder 一词于1684年首次有文字记载,由前缀 be- 这里意为“完全地”和1613年首次发现的意为“使迷路”的动词 wilder 组成。 Wilder 可能从 wilderness 反演而来,一个比 wilder 古老得多的词。 英语使用者可能误以为wilderness 是从更古老的动词 wilder 产生的, 于是他们把wilderness与可能发生在荒野中的迷路联系起来〔politics〕But in its other sensespolitics can take either a singular or plural verb. Many other nouns that end in-ics behave similarly, and the user is advised to consult specific entries for precise information.但用于其它意思上时,politics 则既可接单数形式的动词也可接复数形式的动词。 许多其它以-ics 结尾的名词用法也是如此, 使用者最好是查阅具体的词项以获取准确的信息〔banal〕The pronunciation ofbanal is not settled among educated speakers of American English. Sixty years ago, H.W. Fowler recommended the pronunciation BAN-al (rhyming withpanel ), but this pronunciation is now regarded as recondite by most Americans:it is preferred by only 2 percent of the Usage Panel.Other possibilities are BANE-al (rhyming withanal ), preferred by 38 percent of the Panel; ba-NAL (rhyming withcanal ), preferred by 46 percent; and ba-NAHL (the last syllable rhyming withdoll ), preferred by 14 percent (this last pronunciation is more common in British English). Some panelists admit to being so vexed by the problem that they tend to avoid the word in conversation.Speakers can perhaps take comfort in knowing that any one of the last three pronunciations will have the support of a substantial minority, and that none of them is incorrect. When several pronunciations of a word are widely used, there is really no right or wrong one. 当一个单词的几种发音都被广泛使用时,便的确无所谓对错了〔computerdom〕The world of computers and those who use them.计算机王国:计算机使用者的世界或者计算机的世界〔cockroach〕The word forcockroach in Spanish is cucaracha, which should certainly set anyone with an eye for etymology to thinking.Users of English did not simply borrow the Spanish word, however.Instead, they made it conform in appearance to other English words:cock, the word for rooster, and roach, the name of a fish. We do not know exactly why these words were chosenother than their resemblance to the two parts of the original Spanish word.We do know that the first recorded use of the word comes from a 1624 work by the colonist John Smith. The form Smith used, cacarootch, is closer to the Spanish. A form more like our own, cockroche, is first recorded in 1657. cockroach 更加像我们自己的形式的cockroche ,在1657年首次有记录 〔hypermedia〕A computer-based information retrieval system that enables a user to gain or provide access to texts, audio and video recordings, photographs, and computer graphics related to a particular subject.超媒体:一种计算机信息检索系统,此系统能令使用者获得或存取某一特定主题的文本、视听记录、照片或计算机图象〔multiuser〕Of or relating to a device or product, such as a computer system, that can be used by more than one person at the same time.多使用者的:计算机系统等装置、产品的或与其相关的,能让多个使用者同时使用〔taskbar〕A row of buttons or graphical controls on a computer screen that represent open programs, among which the user can switch back and forth by clicking on the appropriate one.工作列,工具列:计算机屏幕上一排代表开启程序的控制按键或图标列,使用者只要按下适当按钮,就可以前后切换自如〔hypertext〕A computer-based text retrieval system that enables the user to provide access to or gain information related to a particular text.超文本:一种计算机文本检索系统,此系统能令使用者存取或获得某一特定文本的相关信息〔assassin〕At first glance, one would be hard-pressed to find a link between pleasure and the acts of assassins.Such was not the case, however, with those who gave us the wordassassin. They were members of a secret Islamic order originating in the 11th centurywho believed it was a religious duty to harass and murder their enemies. The most important members of the order were those who actually did the killing.Having been promised paradise in return for dying in action, the killers,it is said, were made to yearn for paradise by being given a life of pleasure that included the use of hashish.Hence, the name for the secret order as a whole,ḥaššāšīn, "hashish users.” After passing through French or Italian, the word came into English and is recorded in 1603 with reference to the Moslem assassins. 〔BASIC〕A simplified user-level programming language often employed with remote or time-sharing computer centers.基本语言:一种简化的、使用者层的计算机程序语言,用于远程或分时的计算机中心〔Urdu〕An Indic language that is the official literary language of Pakistan.
