单词 几百年
释义 〔Xmas〕Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where theX is understood to represent a Greek chi, the first letter of Χριστος, "Christ";in this use it is parallel to other forms likeXtian, "Christian.” But the letterX, or especially x, is nowadays more frequently interpreted as a mathematical variable than as a Greek letter, as indicated by the common pronunciation of the formXmas as (ĕksʹməs). Thus, while the word is etymologically innocent of the charge that it omits Christ from Christmas,it is now generally understood only as an informal shortening. In an earlier survey 88 percent of the Usage Panel rejected the use ofXmas in writing. Xmas 〔Transylvania〕A historical region of western Romania bounded by the Transylvanian Alps and the Carpathian Mountains. Part of the Roman province of Dacia aftera.d. 107, it was later overrun by Germanic peoples and came under Hungarian rule in 1003. Transylvania passed to various powers over the following centuries and finally became part of modern-day Romania after World War II. 特兰西瓦尼亚:历史上罗马尼亚西部的一个地区,以特兰西瓦尼亚阿尔卑斯山脉和喀巴阡山脉为边界。公元 107年以后,它是古罗马达西亚省的一部分,后来被日耳曼民族所占领,1003年被匈牙利控制。在后来的几百年里,特兰西瓦尼亚曾被各种政权所控制,二次世界大战以后,它最终成为现代罗马尼亚的一部分 〔dust〕fabric that had fallen to dust over the centuries.经过几百年的时间已化为粉末的织物〔rarely〕In an earlier surveya large majority of the Usage Panel found this construction unacceptable in formal writing.Butever has been used as an intensive with rarely for several hundred years, and the construction is common in informal contexts.By contrast, the constructionsrarely (or seldom ) if ever and rarely (or seldom ) or never are unexceptionable: 根据以前做的调查,大多数用法专题小组认为这种结构不可接受,尤其在正式文章中。但ever 用在 rarely 之后表示强调已有几百年的历史, 而且这种结构在非正式场合是常用的。相反,rarely (或 seldom ) if ever 和 rarely (或 seldom ) or never 这样的结构却是完全能接受的: 〔sack〕The wordsack may seem an odd candidate for preserving a few thousand years of history, but this word for an ordinary thing probably goes back to Middle Eastern antiquity.Sack owes its long history to the fact that it and its ancestors denoted an object that was used in trade between peoples. Thus the Greeks got their wordsakkos, "a bag made out of coarse cloth or hair,” from the Phoenicians with whom they traded. We do not know the Phoenician word, but we know words that are akin to it,such as Hebrewsaq and Akkadian saqqu. The Greeks then passed the sack, as it were, to the Latin-speaking Romans, who transmitted their wordsaccus, "a large bag or sack,” to the Germanic tribes with whom they traded, who gave it the form .sakkiz (other peoples as well have taken this word from Greek or Latin, including speakers of Welsh, Russian, Polish, and Albanian). The speakers of Old English, a Germanic language, used two forms of the word,sæc, from .sakkiz, and sacc, directly from Latin; the second Old English form is the ancestor of oursack. sack 讲古英语(一种日耳曼语言)的人用这个词的两种形式:源自sakkiz 的 sæc 和源自拉丁语的 sacc ; 这第二种古英语的形式是我们现在的sack 的前身 〔erode〕The cliffs have eroded over the centuries. Public confidence in the administration eroded.几百年来悬崖已经被侵蚀了,公众对当局的信心已经被削弱了
