释义 | 〔effete〕The fact thateffete has come to mean "effeminate" marks a return to its etymological roots. Effete came into English from the Latin wordeffētus, made up ofex-, "out,” and the adjective fētus, "having recently given birth,” which is related to the nounfētus, "offspring,” a word we have borrowed as well. Latineffētus was used of plants that had borne fruit or of animals that had borne young, buteffētus could also mean "worn out with bearing young, exhausted, feeble.” The English wordeffete, whose earliest appearance is recorded in 1621, was first used in senses similar or identical to senses of Latineffētus ; however, in the last two centuries or so the senses "characterized by weakness or decadence" and "overrefined, effeminate,” have appeared.Botheffeminate and effete go back to the same Indo-European root, dhē(i)-, meaning "to suck.” Ineffeminate we see the development from a form of the root meaning literally "she who suckles"; ineffete, the development from a form of the root that refers to the baby who sucks milk from the mother. 在effeminate 中,我们看到从词根形式拓展来的意义大体上是“喂奶的女人”; effete 从词根形式发展而来的意义是指从母体身上汲取乳汁的幼儿 〔frontier〕A region just beyond or at the edge of a settled area.边缘地带:刚刚超出或恰好在某特定地区的地带〔noncommittal〕"His face was the color of a freshly baked pork pie and as noncommittal"(Thomas Pynchon)“他的脸色象刚刚烤过的猪肉饼,而且表情暖昧”(托马斯·平琼)〔pleasure〕"The deep joy we take in the company of people with whom we have just recently fallen in love is undisguisable" (John Cheever). “从我们刚刚爱上的一群人中得到的深深的快乐是无法隐藏的” (约翰·奇弗)。 〔larva〕The newly hatched, earliest stage of any of various animals that undergo metamorphosis, differing markedly in form and appearance from the adult.幼体:某些动物在刚刚孵化出来并完成变形之后的最初阶段,在形体和外貌上与成体大不相同〔ultraviolet〕Of or relating to the range of invisible radiation wavelengths from about 4 nanometers, on the border of the x-ray region, to about 380 nanometers, just beyond the violet in the visible spectrum.紫外光的,紫外线的:刚刚超过可见紫光并在X射线区域边上,从大约4毫微米到380毫微米之间的不可视辐射波长的或与之有关的〔good〕The first serve was wide, but the second was good.第一球发得太远了,第二球发得刚刚好〔sign〕signed a rookie pitcher for next season; sign up actors for a tour. 刚刚起步,就遇到了困难〔meager〕gave us scant respect) or to what falls short of an expected or desired amount ( 给我们刚刚足够的尊重), 或指未达到预期的数量( 〔pinfeather〕A growing feather still enclosed in its horny sheath, especially one just emerging through the skin.(鸟类的)新生毛:一种裹在角鞘中的新生毛,特别是刚刚冒出皮肤外的羽毛〔chamaephyte〕A low-growing perennial plant whose dormant overwintering buds are borne at or just above the surface of the ground.地上芽植物:一种低矮的多年生植物,其冬眠越冬的芽长于地表或刚刚高出地面〔twilight〕The time of the day when the sun is just below the horizon, especially the period between sunset and dark. 仅仅:几乎没有;刚刚〔welcome〕A cordial greeting or hospitable reception given to an arriving person.欢迎,款待:对刚刚到达的人的衷心问候或热情的接待〔new〕These adjectives describe what has existed for only a short time, has only lately come into use, or has only recently arrived at a state or position, as of prominence. 〔ruin〕"The Boers had just wrecked a British military train" (Arnold Bennett).Whenwreck is used in its extended sense, as in referring to the ruination of a person or his or her hopes or reputation, it implies irreparable shattering: “布尔人刚刚毁了一辆英国军用火车” (阿诺德·贝奈特)。Wreck 用于其延伸意义时(如指毁坏一个人或他或她的希望或名声), 暗指无可挽回的毁灭: 〔shoot〕The young growth arising from a germinating seed; a sprout.
