释义 〔chivvy〕A hunting cry.追猎时发出的叫喊声〔chant〕A monotonous rhythmic call or shout, as of a slogan:叫喊声:单调有节奏的号召或呼喊,如喊口号:〔cuckoo〕The call or cry of one of these birds.杜鹃叫声:这些鸟之一的叫喊声〔cry〕A loud utterance of an emotion, such as fear, anger, or despair.叫喊声:表达某种感情的大叫声,如恐惧、生气或绝望〔yodel〕A song or cry that is yodeled.真假嗓音变换唱出的歌或发出的叫喊声〔clamor〕A loud outcry; a hubbub.大的叫喊声;嘈杂声〔yelp〕To utter a short, sharp bark or cry:吠,叫喊:发出短促、尖利的狗吠或叫喊声〔hail〕A shout made to catch someone's attention or to greet.招呼声:用来引起某人注意或问候的叫喊声〔quark〕"Three quarks for Muster Mark! / Sure he hasn't got much of a bark / And sure any he has it's all beside the mark.” This passage of James Joyce'sFinnegans Wake is part of a scurrilous 13-line poem directed against King Mark, the cuckolded husband in the Tristan legend. The poem and the accompanying prose are packed with names of birds and words suggestive of birds, and the poem is a squawk, like the cawing of a crow, against King Mark. Thus, Joyce uses the wordquark, which comes from the standard English verbquark, meaning "to caw, croak,” and also from the dialectal verb quawk, meaning"to caw, screech like a bird.” But Joyce'squark was not what it has become: "any of a group of hypothetical subatomic particles proposed as the fundamental units of matter.”Murray Gell-Mann, the physicist who proposed these particles, in a private letter of June 27, 1978, to the editor of theOxford English Dictionary, said that he had actually been influenced by Joyce's word in naming the particle, although the influence was subconscious at first.Gell-Mann was thinking of using the pronunciation (kwôrk) for the particle, possibly something he had picked up fromFinnegans Wake, which he "had perused from time to time since it appeared in 1939. . . . The allusion to three quarks seemed perfect" (originally there were only three subatomic quarks).Gell-Mann, however, wanted to pronounce the word with (ô) not (ä), as Joyce seemed to indicate by rhyming words in the vicinity such asMark. Gell-Mann got around that "by supposing that one ingredient of the line ‘Three quarks for Muster Mark’was a cry of ‘Three quarts for Mister . . . ’ heard in H.C. Earwicker's pub.” 基尔曼认为这行诗中的一部分“对马克王呱叫三声”,实际上是在酒店中听到的“给这位先生来三夸脱酒”叫喊声〔shout〕The central meaning shared by these verbs is "to say with or make a loud, strong cry": 这些动词所共有的中心意思是“高声有力地说或发出高声有力的叫喊声”: 〔chivvy〕Variant of chevy [a hunt, hunting cry] chevy的变体 [追猎,追猎时发出的叫喊声] 〔yelp〕A short, sharp cry or bark.短促、尖利的叫喊声或狗叫声〔squeal〕To give forth a loud, shrill cry or sound.发尖叫声:发出大而尖锐的叫喊声〔yip〕A sharp, high-pitched bark; a yelp.犬吠声,叫喊声:尖利高亢高吭的狗叫声,叫喊声〔gringo〕The wordgringo is an offensive term in Latin America for a foreigner, particularly an American or English person. But the word existed in Spanish before this particular sense came into being. In fact, gringo may be an alteration of the word griego, the Spanish development of LatinGraecus, "Greek.” Griego first meant "Greek, Grecian,”as an adjective and "Greek, Greek language,” as a noun. The saying "It's Greek to me" exists in Spanish,as it does in English, and helps us understand whygriego came to mean "unintelligible language" and perhaps, by further extension of this idea,"stranger, that is, one who speaks a foreign language.”The altered formgringo lost touch with Greek but has the senses "unintelligible language,” "foreigner, especially an English person,”and in Latin America, "North American or Britisher.”Its first recorded English use (1849) is in John Woodhouse Audubon'sWestern Journal: "We were hooted and shouted at as we passed through, and called ‘Gringoes.’”
