The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔haggadist〕A student of haggadic literature.犹太教法典中传说的研究者:研究太教法典中传说或轶事等的学者〔goliard〕A wandering student in medieval Europe disposed to conviviality, license, and the making of ribald and satirical Latin songs.放纵派吟游诗人:在中世纪的欧洲追崇享受和不受拘束的生活,作一些通俗或讽刺的拉丁歌谣的流浪学者〔Kittredge〕American scholar noted for his expertise on the works of Chaucer and Shakespeare.基特里奇,乔治·莱曼:(1860-1941) 美国学者,以其关于乔叟和莎士比亚作品的专门知识而著名〔rabbi〕A scholar qualified to interpret Jewish law.犹太学者,法师:有资格解释犹太法律的学者〔Alcuin〕Anglo-Saxon prelate and scholar who was a leader in the revival of learning in medieval Europe.阿尔昆:盎格鲁-撒克逊高级教士及学者,为中世纪欧洲文化复兴的一个领袖〔mufti〕A Moslem scholar who interprets the shari’a.伊斯兰学者:解释伊斯兰教义的伊斯兰学者〔Alfred〕King of the West Saxons (871-899), scholar, and lawmaker who repelled the Danes and helped consolidate England into a unified kingdom.阿尔弗烈德:英格兰韦塞克斯王国国王(871-899年)、学者及立法者,曾击败了丹麦人的侵略并使英格兰成为统一的王国〔punditocracy〕A group of pundits who wield great political influence.政论团体:一群拥有强大政治影响力的学者专家〔pundit〕from Sanskrit paṇḍitaḥ [learned; scholar] 源自 梵文 paṇḍitaḥ [有学问的;学者] 〔Moore〕American scholar and poet who wrote the Christmas poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (1823).穆尔,克雷芒·克拉克:(1779-1863) 美国学者和诗人,著有圣诞诗歌“圣尼古拉斯来访”(1823年)〔Reuchlin〕German humanist and scholar who wroteOn the Fundamentals of Hebrew (1506), a classic text on Hebrew grammar and language. 罗伊希林,约翰:(1455-1522) 德国人文主义者和学者,撰写了《希伯来语语法纲要》 (1506年),是一本关于希伯来语语法和语言的经典教科书 〔Chatterton〕British poet who fooled scholars by ascribing his poetry to a 15th-century monk, Thomas Rowley.
