The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔crow〕To make a sound expressive of pleasure or well-being, characteristic of an infant.欢叫:象婴儿似地发出表示愉悦或幸福的声音〔thoughtful〕These adjectives mean having or showing concern for the well-being of others.Althoughthoughtful and considerate are often used interchangeably, thoughtful implies a tendency to anticipate needs or wishes, whereasconsiderate stresses sensitivity to another's feelings: 这些形容词的意思是对别人的幸福表现出关切。尽管thoughtful 和 considerate 经常通用, 但thoughtful 指过早考虑需求和希望的倾向, 而considerate 强调对他人情感的敏感性: 〔snuggle〕snuggled happily under the covers.在盖子底下幸福地蜷伏着〔consummate〕consummate happiness.See Synonyms at perfect 圆满的幸福 参见 perfect〔blessed〕Bringing happiness, pleasure, or contentment.使人有福的:赐与幸福、快乐或满足的〔seem〕looks happy. 看起来很幸福 〔kind〕Benevolent suggests charitableness and a desire to promote the welfare or happiness of others: Benevolent 暗示慈善和希望促使他人的幸福或快乐: 〔excel〕happiness that surpassed description.难以形容的幸福。〔felicitous〕Marked by happiness or good fortune:处于幸福中的或交好运的:〔glow〕A warm feeling, as of pleasure or well-being.热烈:温暖的感觉,如因幸福或高兴〔blessing〕Something promoting or contributing to happiness, well-being, or prosperity; a boon.福祉,幸事:促进或奉献幸福、富有或繁荣的事物;恩惠〔life〕She led a good, long life.她的一生幸福长寿〔sheer〕sheer stupidity; sheer happiness.十足的愚蠢;真正的幸福〔measureless〕measureless happiness.See Synonyms at incalculable 巨大的幸福 参见 incalculable〔soul〕The spiritual nature of human beings, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death, and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state.灵魂:人类的精神本质,被认为是永恒的,死亡时与人体分开,易受未来状态的幸福与痛苦的影响〔high〕"A high price has to be paid for the happy marriage with the four healthy children"(Doris Lessing)“得到有四个健康孩子的幸福婚姻必须付出高昂代价”(多丽丝·莱辛)〔much〕"Happiness is an emotion not often spoken of at the magazine, much less experienced"(Brendan Gill)“幸福不是经常在杂志上提到的感情,更不用说是能够时常体验得到的”(布伦丹·吉尔)〔weak〕"Frail is our happiness, if this be so" (John Milton). What isfragile is easily broken, damaged, or destroyed: “脆弱是我们的幸福,如果真是那样的话” (约翰·弥尔顿)。Fragile 的意思是易折断的、易受损的或被毁坏的; |
