单词 | 异教徒 |
释义 | 〔ethnic〕When in a Middle English text written before 1400it is said that a part of a temple fell down and "mad a gret distruccione of ethnykis,”one wonders why ethnics were singled out for death. The wordethnic in this context, however, means "gentile,” coming as it does from the Greek adjectiveethnikos, meaning "national, foreign, gentile.”The adjective is derived from the nounethnos, "people, nation, foreign people,” that in the plural phraseta ethnē meant "foreign nations.” In translating the Hebrew Bible into Greek, this phrase was used for Hebrewgōyīm, "gentiles"; hence the sense of the noun in the Middle English quotation. The nounethnic in this sense or the related sense "heathen" is not recorded after 1728, although the related adjective sense is still used. But probably under the influence of other words going back to Greekethnos, such asethnography and ethnology, the adjectiveethnic broadened in meaning in the 19th century. After this broadeningthe noun sense "a member of a particular ethnic group,”first recorded in 1945, came into existence. 非犹太人的;异教徒的〔cult〕The followers of such a religion or sect.异教徒:该种宗教或宗教派别的追随者〔Julian〕Emperor of Rome (361-363) who attempted to restore the official dominance of paganism.朱利安:罗马皇帝(361-363年),曾试图恢复对异教徒的法定统治〔paynim〕from pāgānus [pagan] * see pagan 源自 pāgānus [异教徒] * 参见 pagan〔giaour〕from Arabic kāfir [infidel] 源自 阿拉伯语 kāfir [异教徒] 〔infidel〕An unbeliever with respect to a particular religion, especially Christianity or Islam.异教徒:不信仰某一种宗教(尤指基督教或伊斯兰教)的人〔miscreant〕An infidel; a heretic.异教徒;异端者〔pagan〕One who is not a Christian, Moslem, or Jew; a heathen.异教徒:基督教、犹太教或伊斯兰教徒以外的人;异教徒〔Wicca〕A pagan nature religion having its roots in pre-Christian western Europe and undergoing a 20th-century revival, especially in the United States and Great Britain.巫术崇拜,巫术迷信:源于基督教产生前西欧的一种异教徒的自然宗教,20世纪以来又有重新兴起的势头,尤其在美国和英国〔Latimer〕English prelate who refused to recant his Protestantism after the accession of Mary I, a Catholic, and was executed for heresy.雷帝默,休:(1485?-1555) 英国高级教士,他在天主教徒玛丽一世就职后拒绝放弃他的新教信仰而被当作异教徒处死〔gentile〕from Late Latin gentīlis [pagan] 源自 后期拉丁语 gentīlis [异教徒] 〔convert〕convert pagans to Christianity; was converted to pacifism by the war.使异教徒皈依基督教;成为反战论者〔hoyden〕probably from Dutch heiden [heathen, boor] 可能源自 荷兰语 heiden [异教徒,蠢笨的人] 〔heathenish〕Of or having to do with heathens.异教徒的或与异教徒有关的〔pagan〕Professing no religion; heathen.无宗教信仰的,异教的:公开声称无宗教的;异教徒的〔pagan〕Not Christian, Moslem, or Jewish.异教徒的:不是基督教、伊斯兰教或犹太教教徒的〔jihad〕A Moslem holy war or spiritual struggle against infidels.圣战:穆斯林反对异教徒的圣战或神圣斗争〔heathen〕One who adheres to the religion of a people or nation that does not acknowledge the God of Judaism, Christianity, or Islam.异教徒:一个国家或民族中不信犹太教、基督教或伊斯兰教的人〔miscreant〕Middle English miscreaunt [heretic] 中古英语 miscreaunt [异教徒] 〔giaour〕A nonbeliever; an infidel.没有信仰的人;异教徒〔paynim〕A pagan or heathen.异教徒或不信教的人〔gentile〕A pagan or heathen.异教徒或不信教的人〔Gratian〕Emperor of Rome (367-383) who ruled jointly (from 379) with Theodosius I.
