释义 | 〔whore〕Derivatives of Indo-European roots often make strange bedfellows. A prime example is the case of.kā-, "to like, desire.” From the stem.kāro- derived from this root came the prehistoric Common Germanic word .hōraz with the underlying meaning "one who desires" and the effective meaning "adulterer.” From this word came the Old English wordhōre, the ancestor of Modern Englishwhore. The same stem produced the Latin wordcārus, "dear,” from which came Modern Englishcaress, cherish, and charity, the highest form of love. Contact with East Indian culture has added yet another pair of derivatives from this Indo-European root to the English language. From the stem.kāmo- came the Sanskrit word kāmaḥ, "love, desire,” from which are derived the English borrowingsKama, "the Hindu god of love,” andKamasutra, "a Sanskrit treatise on the rules of love and marriage according to Hindu law.” 从词干kamo- 产生出梵语词 kamah “爱,欲望”, 从这个词又产生出英语的外来词Kama “印度人的爱神”, 和Kamasutra “根据印度法律所制定的关于爱情和婚姻的规定的梵语论述” 〔claustrophobic〕This latter usage was unacceptable to 74 percent of the members of the Usage Panel, many of whom said thatclaustrophobic should be used only to describe a psychological state. In defense of this usage, however, it can be pointed out that it is well establishedand that it follows a general tendencyto combine adjectives with nouns according to a progressively looser construal of the semantic connection between the two. Thus the phrasetopless swimsuit came to be followed by topless dancers, which led in turn totopless bars, topless districts, and topless ordinances. By the same token,a room that induces a particular emotion may be described assad or cheerful without objection, and there seems to be no principled basis for drawing the line at calling itclaustrophobic. Unexceptionable is derived from the word exception in the sense "objection,” as in the idiomtake exception. Thusunexceptionable means "not open to any objection,” as inA judge's ethical standards should be unexceptionable. Unexceptional, in contrast, is related to the common sense of exception and generally means "not exceptional, not varying from the usual,” as inSome judges' ethical standards have unfortunately been unexceptional. Unexceptional 与 unexceptionable 有时被混淆了。 Unexceptionable 是由词 exception 引出的,有“反对”的意思, 如在成语take exception。 而unexceptionable 表示“不会有任何反对,” 如在A judge's ethical standards should be unexceptionable.(法官的伦理标准应该是无懈可击的)。 Unexceptional,相比之下,是有关 exception 的一般意义,通常表示“无例外的,不从通常改变的," 如在Some judge's ethical standards have unfortunately been unexceptional.(某些法官的伦理标准不幸地是不容许有例外的) 〔noticeable〕 Remarkable describes what elicits comment because it is unusual or extraordinary: Remarkable 表示那些因不平常和杰出而引出的评论: 〔feeler〕Something, such as a hint or question, designed to elicit the attitudes or intentions of others.试探器:为引出别人的态度或意图而设计的一个暗示或问题〔leading〕Formulated so as to elicit a desired response:诱导的:为了引出所期望的回答而制定的:〔now〕Used to introduce a command, reproof, or request:用来引出命令、谴责或要求:〔draw〕To evoke as a response; elicit:博得:引起反应;引出:〔if〕Used to introduce an exclamatory clause, indicating a wish:但愿,要是…该多好啊:用来引出一个表达愿望的感叹句,表达一个愿望:〔footnote〕Abbr. fn.A note placed at the bottom of a page of a book or manuscript that comments on or cites a reference for a designated part of the text.缩写 fn.脚注:放在书或手稿的页底的注释,对文中的标明的一部分加以评论或引出参考书目〔enmity〕Rancor suggests the harboring of hatred and resentment typically traceable to past grievances that have led to a desire for revenge: Rancor 指心怀憎恨和怨艾,常可追溯到已过去的哀伤而引出复仇的渴望: 〔wonderful〕Capable of eliciting wonder; astonishing:惊人的,奇妙的:有能力引出奇迹的;惊人的:〔sluice〕To draw off or let out by a sluice:泄洪:用泄洪道引出或排出:〔also〕Besides often introduces an element that reinforces what has gone before: Besides 经常引出一个加强前面内容的成份: 〔Newcastle〕Or Newcastle upon Tyne [tīn] A borough of northeast England on the Tyne River north of Leeds. Built on the site of a Roman military station, it became a coal-shipping port in the 13th century and was the principal center for coal exports after the 16th century. Its prominence in the trade gave rise to the expressionto carry coals to Newcastle, meaning "to do something superfluous or unnecessary.” Population, 285,300. 或 Newcastle upon Tyne [tīn] 纽卡斯尔:英格兰东北部自治区,位于利兹以北泰恩河畔。建于罗马军事站的地点,13世纪它成为一个煤炭出口港口,16世纪以后成为主要的煤炭出口中心。它在贸易中的杰出地位引出这样一句话 to carry coal to Newcastle(送煤给纽卡斯尔) 意思是“多此一举。”人口285,300 〔drag〕To move or bring by force or with great effort:使力拉,强迫:强迫或费力地移动或引出:〔educe〕To draw or bring out; elicit.See Synonyms at evoke 引出或带出;启迪 参见 evoke〔evoke〕The central meaning shared by these verbs is "to draw forth or bring out something latent, hidden, or unexpressed": 这些动词所共有的中心意思是:“推引出或显示出潜在的、隐藏的、未表达出的事物”: 〔mattress〕The history of the wordmattress is a small lesson in the way amenities have come to Europe from the Middle East. During the earlier part of the Middle Ages,Arabic culture was more advanced than that of Europe. One of the amenities of life enjoyed by the Arabs was sleeping on cushions thrown on the floor.Derived from the Arabic wordṭaraḥa, "to throw,” the word maṭraḥ meant "place where something is thrown" and "mat, cushion.”This kind of sleeping surface was adopted by the Europeans during the Crusades, and the Arabic word was taken into Italian (materasso ) and then into Old French ( materas ), from which comes the Middle English wordmateras , first recorded in a work written around 1300. The Arabic word also became Medieval Latinmatracium, another source of our word.mattress 这个阿拉伯词同时也被收入中世纪拉丁语,即matracium , 这也是我们这个单词的另一个来源〔inspire〕To draw forth; elicit or arouse:引起,引出或唤起:〔whether〕Used in indirect questions to introduce one alternative:是不是,是否:用于间接引语中以引出一选择:〔butterfly〕Is a butterfly named for the color of its excrement or because it was really a thieving witch? The first suggestion rests on the fact that an early Dutch name for the butterfly wasboterschijte. This name is as astonishing a phenomenon as the fact that anyone ever noticed the color of butterfly excrement.Apparently, however, when the butterfly was not busy leaving colorful traces of itself, it was stealing milk and butter. This was not because of its thievish nature but because it was really a mischievous witch in the form of a winged insect. So the second suggestion is that this predilection for butter larceny gave rise to the colorful insect's name. 所以第二个假设就是这种奶油盗窃的嗜好引出了彩色昆虫的命名〔elicit〕To call forth (a reaction, for example).See Synonyms at evoke 引出(例如,一种反应) 参见 evoke〔conduce〕To contribute or lead to a specific result:有助于:促成或引出某一特定结果:〔hickey〕A threaded electrical fitting to connect a fixture to an outlet box.螺纹接口:用于接合电气装置和引出盒的螺纹接口〔also〕These adverbs indicate the presence of or introduce something additional. The first three generally imply that the additional element or consideration is equal in weight to what precedes it.这些副词表示出或引出附加的事物的存在。前三个词一般暗示出附加成分或考虑与前面的内容同样重要。〔elicit〕To bring or draw out (something latent); educe.诱出,引出:引出或拉出(潜在的某物);诱出〔purview〕from Anglo-Norman purveu est [it is provided (from the use of this word to introduce a proviso)] [past participle of] purveier [to provide] * see purvey 源自 英法语 purveu est [附带的(通过这个词的使用引出附带条款)] purveier的过去分词 [提供] * 参见 purvey |
