He explained that this name was part of the title of "a silly fairy tale, calledThe Three Princes of Serendip : as their highnesses traveled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of . . . One of the most remarkable instances of thisaccidental sagacity ( for you must observe thatno discovery of a thing you are looking for, comes under this description) was of my Lord Shaftsbury [Anthony Ashley Cooper],who happening to dine at Lord Chancellor Clarendon's [Edward Hyde],found out the marriage of the Duke of York [later James II] and Mrs. Hyde [Anne Hyde, Clarendon's daughter], by the respect with which her mother [Frances Aylesbury Hyde] treated her at table.” The Three Princes of Serendip 自食其果:产生了与意图相反的结果;产生意外的后果〔overtake〕geopolitical strategists who were overtaken by events in the Middle East.在中东地区遭遇到很多意外的地理政治学战略家〔supervene〕To come or occur as something extraneous, additional, or unexpected.See Synonyms at follow 意外发生:作为非必要的、附加的或意外的事件而发生 参见 follow〔bond〕An insurance contract in which an agency guarantees payment to an employer in the event of unforeseen financial loss through the actions of an employee.保险单:一种保证合同,保险方保证一旦由于雇员的行动造成意外的经济损失,雇主将得到陪偿〔bathos〕An abrupt, unintended transition in style from the exalted to the commonplace, producing a ludicrous effect. 意外的,偶然发生的〔abrupt〕Unexpectedly sudden:意外的,突然的:〔backfire〕To produce an unexpected, undesired result.发生意外:产生意外的,令人失望的结果〔hit〕To become highly and unexpectedly successful, especially to win a great deal of money. 意外的不幸事件;倒霉事〔sleeper〕One that achieves unexpected recognition or success, as a racehorse, a movie, or a marketed product.
