Such has not always been the case. The story ofgauntlet 1, as into throw down the gauntlet, is unexciting: it comes from the Old French wordgantelet, a diminutive of gant, "glove.” From the time of its appearance in Middle English (in a work composed in 1449),the word has been spelled with anau as well as an a, still a possible spelling. But the othergauntlet, as into run the gauntlet, is an alteration of the earlier English formgantlope, which came from the Swedish wordgatlopp, a compound ofgata, "lane,” and lopp, "course.” The earliest recorded form of the English word, found in 1646,isgantelope, showing that alteration of the Swedish word had already occurred. The English word was then influenced by the spelling of the wordgauntlet, "glove,” and in 1676 we find the first recorded instance of the spellinggauntlet for this word, althoughgantelope is found as late as 1836. From then on spellings withau and a are both found. Theau seems to have won out, although one could say that thea is preferable because it reflects the Swedish source. In regard to a word that has been so altered in form, this seems a rather fine point. 说到一个形式已发生了如此变化的单词,这似乎是个好建议〔glove〕To cover with or as if with a glove.用或好象用手套保护的〔cestus〕A covering for the hand made of leather straps weighted with iron or lead and worn by boxers in ancient Rome.古罗马拳击手套:古罗马拳击手戴的用皮条编制、常装有铁或铅块的手套〔palm〕The part of a glove or mitten that covers the palm of the hand.(手套的)掌份:覆盖手掌的物体或手套的一部分〔digitalis〕The name of the plant genusDigitalis, whose member the foxglove provides an important drug used to treat heart disease,is associated with another part of the body, the finger.InDigitalis, which comes from the Latin word digitālis, meaning "relating to a finger,”we recognizedigit, which derives from Latin digitus, "finger, toe.” In Modern Latin the genus name was chosenbecause the German name for the foxglove isFingerhut, "thimble,” or literally "finger hat.” The second part of our wordfoxglove also refers to the similarity of the foxglove blossoms to the fingers of a glove. Digitalis is first recorded in English in a work published in 1664. 毛地黄 属的植物毛地黄, 是治疗心脏病的重要药物,与身体另一部位手指有关。Digitalis 来自于拉丁语 digitalis , 意指“与手指有关的”。我们认为digit 来源于表示“手指,脚趾”的拉丁语 digitus 。 在新拉丁语中选定了种属名称,是因为熟地的日耳曼语名称是Fingerhut “指套”或字面上的“指套”。 Foxglove 的第二部分是指毛地黄开花时与手套的指头很相似。 英语中第一次记录Digitalis 的作品是在1664年发表 〔gauntlet〕A dress glove cuffed above the wrist.长手套:礼服手套,袖口延伸至腕部以上〔mine〕The green gloves are mine.
