The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔desterilize〕To release (gold) from an inactive status and return it to use as a backing for credit and new currency.解封(黄金):解除(黄金的)闲置地位,恢复其作为资金支柱和新的流通货币的使用〔axiomatic〕"the axiomatic pillars of a new code of the law of nations"(William Taylor)“国家法律新准则的公理的支柱”(威廉·泰勒)〔strut〕A bar or rod used to brace a structure against forces applied from the side.支柱:从旁侧支撑建筑物的木条或杆子〔mooring〕Often moorings Elements providing stability or security: 常作 moorings 支柱:提供稳定性和可靠性的因素:〔pillar〕Such a structure or one similar to it used for decoration.台柱:用于装饰的类似柱子结构或支柱〔stollen〕German [prop, support, stollen] * see stull 德语 [支柱,支撑,果子面包] * 参见 stull〔solan〕Old Norse sūla [pillar, gannet] 古斯堪的纳维亚语 sūla [支柱,塘鹅] 〔mainstay〕Agriculture is a mainstay of the economy.农业是经济的支柱〔pillar〕A slender, freestanding, vertical support; a column.柱子,支柱:细长、独撑的垂直支撑物;柱子〔prop〕One that serves as a support or stay:后盾,靠山:作为支柱或靠山的人:〔stull〕A supporting timber or other prop in a mine.支柱:防止崩塌、保护矿工的板架〔spreader〕A device, such as a bar, for keeping wires or stays apart.隔离装置:一种将电线或支柱隔开的装置,如围栏〔baluster〕An upright support, such as a furniture leg, having a similar shape.支柱:一种直立的具有相似形状的支撑物,如家具腿〔shore〕shored up the sagging floors; shored up the peace initiative.用支柱撑住下陷的天花板;掌握和平的主动权〔mooring〕lost their emotional moorings during the war.在战争中丢弃了他们的情感支柱〔jack〕A support or brace, especially the iron crosstree on a topgallant masthead.铁横桁:撑杆或支柱,尤指上桅桅顶的铁横桁〔pawl〕from Latin pālus [stake] * see pag- 源自 拉丁语 pālus [桩,支柱] * 参见 pag- 〔tholos〕A beehive-shaped stone tomb of Mycenaean Greece, roofed by corbeling and usually built into the side of a hill.圆形建筑:希腊麦锡尼时期的一种利用支柱结构来建构屋顶的蜂窝状石墓,通常建在山边〔pier〕A pillar, rectangular in cross section, supporting an arch or roof.支柱:交叉处的长方形柱子,支撑一个拱顶或屋顶 |
