The hero, a shepherd, is supposed to have been the first victim of the disease. Where the nameSyphilus itself came from is not known for certain, but it has been suggested that Fracastoro borrowed the name from Ovid'sMetamorphoses. In Ovid's work Sipylus (spelledSiphylus in some manuscripts) is the oldest son of Niobe, who lived not far from Mount Sipylon in Asia Minor.Fracastoro's poem about Syphilus was modeled on the story of Niobe.Although the etymology involving Sipylus was known to the editors of theOxford English Dictionary, it was not accepted as their last word on the subject.C.T. Onions, one of the dictionary's editors, writing in theOxford Dictionary of English Etymology, says that “ Syphilus [the shepherd's name] is of unkn[own] origin.” Fracastoro went on to use the termsyphilis again in his medical treatise De Contagione, published in 1546. The word that Fracastoro used in Latin was eventually borrowed into English, being first recorded in 1718.1530年,吉罗拉莫·弗拉卡斯特罗,一位医生,天文学家,也是维罗纳的诗人,发表了名为"Syphius, sive Morbus Gallicus"的诗,译作“梅毒,或法国疾病”。 See Synonyms at pretend 对这个故事假装感兴趣 参见 pretend〔check〕The suspect's story checked out.嫌疑犯讲述的故事得到了证实〔narrative〕A narrated account; a story.被叙述的某事;故事〔hold〕had to put the romance on hold.得让那个故事有点悬念〔spinner〕a spinner of flax; a spinner of tall tales.亚麻纺织机;编造荒诞不经的故事的人〔Aleichem〕Russian-born Jewish humorist whose stories and plays, originally written in Yiddish, were the basis for the musicalFiddler on the Roof. 阿萨赫姆,萨罗姆:(1859-1916) 俄裔犹太幽默作家,其原用意第绪语写成的故事和剧本是音乐剧《屋顶上的提琴手》 的剧本 〔twist〕a twist of fate; a story with a quirky twist.命运的扭转;跌宕起伏的故事〔dark〕stories that are large in scope and dark in substance.故事范围庞大,但内容难以理解〔Jewett〕American writer noted for novels and stories concerning her native Maine. The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) is considered her finest work. 朱艾特,撒拉·奥恩:(1849-1909) 美国作家,以涉及她的家乡——缅因州的小说和故事而著名。《尖尖的枞树之乡》 (1896年)被评为是她最好的作品 〔storybook〕storybook characters; a storybook romance.故事书中有人物;像故事书中的故事一般的浪漫〔myth〕Such stories considered as a group:神话:被认为一个群体的那些故事:〔Offenbach〕French composer noted for his operettas and the operaTales of Hoffman (performed 1881). 奥芬巴赫,雅克:(1819-1880) 法国作曲家,以小歌剧和歌剧《霍夫曼的故事》 (1881年上演)而著名 〔conte〕A medieval narrative tale.中世纪的叙述体故事〔whale〕a whale of a story.令人印象深刻的故事〔allegorize〕a story of barnyard animals that allegorizes the fate of Soviet socialism.讲述关于谷仓前空地上动物的故事讽喻了苏维埃社会主义的命运〔Michener〕American writer of historical novels, such asTales of the South Pacific (1947), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize, and The Source (1965). 米切纳,詹姆斯·阿尔贝特:(生于 1907) 美国历史小说家,著有《南太平洋故事》 (1947年)并以此书获普利策奖,还著有 《源泉》 (1965年) 〔shocker〕One that startles, shocks, or horrifies, as a sensational story or novel.令人吃惊的东西:令人吃惊,震惊或恐惧的东西,比如耸人听闻的小说或故事〔storybook〕A book containing a collection of stories, usually for children.故事书:包括一系列故事的书,常供孩子阅读〔folktale〕A story or legend forming part of an oral tradition.民间故事:形成口头传说部分的故事或传说〔afar〕Tales from afar.来自远方的故事〔Olsen〕American writer whose short story "Tell Me a Riddle,” published in a collection of the same name (1961), depicts the embittered determination of a woman who has lived her life for others.奥尔森,蒂烈:(生于 1913) 美国作家,他的短篇小说“给我猜个谜”,收在同名的短篇小说集中(1961年)。这篇小说描写的是一个为他人活着的女人,在生活信念方面屡受挫折的故事〔yet〕a yet sadder tale.一个更悲伤的故事〔flow〕a flow of ideas; produced a steady flow of articles and stories.蜂拥而来的念头;源源不绝的创作和故事〔monologue〕A continuous series of jokes or comic stories delivered by one comedian.独角戏:由一个喜剧演员所表演的一系列的笑话或喜剧故事〔fill〕filled the child's mind with strange ideas; a story that filled our hearts with joy.使孩子的头脑中充满了古怪的想法;一则使我们心里充满了喜悦的故事 |
