The seven-day system we use is based on the ancient astrological notion that the seven celestial bodies (the sun, the moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) revolving around stationary Earth influence what happens on itand that each of these celestial bodies controls the first hour of the day named after it.This system was brought into Hellenistic Egypt from Mesopotamia, where astrology had been practiced for millenniums and where seven had always been a propitious number.Ina.d. 321 the Emperor Constantine the Great grafted this astrological system onto the Roman calendar, made the first day of this new week a day of rest and worship for all,and imposed the following sequence and names to the days of the week:Diēs Sōlis, "Sun's Day"; Diēs Lūnae, "Moon's Day"; Diēs Martis, "Mars's Day"; Diēs Mercuriī, "Mercury's Day"; Diēs Iovis, "Jove's Day" or "Jupiter's Day"; Diēs Veneris, "Venus's Day"; andDiēs Saturnī, "Saturn's Day.” This new Roman system was adopted with modifications throughout most of western Europe:in the Germanic languages, such as Old English, the names of four of the Roman gods were converted into those of the corresponding Germanic gods. Therefore in Old English we have the following names (with their Modern English developments):Sunnandæg, Sunday; Mōnandæg, Monday; Tīwesdæg, Tuesday (the god Tiu, like Mars, was a god of war); Wōdnesdæg, Wednesday (the god Woden, like Mercury, was quick and eloquent); Thunresdæg, Thursday ( the god Thunor in Old English or Thor in Old Norse, like Jupiter, was lord of the sky;Old NorseThōrsdagr influenced the English form); Frīgedæg, Friday (the goddess Frigg, like Venus, was the goddess of love); andSaeternesdæg, Saturday. 第六:在一组中与数字六相配的序数〔infinitude〕An immeasurably large quantity, number, or extent:无穷数,无限量:巨大的数量、数字或程度:〔sixty〕A decade or the numbers from 60 to 69:六十几:六十年代或者从六十到六十九之间的数字〔cipher〕The Arabic system of numerical notation.数字观念:数字标志法的阿拉伯体系〔numerical〕Designating number or a number:用数值或数字表示:〔product〕The number or quantity obtained by multiplying two or more numbers together.积,乘积:两个或两个以上数字相乘得到的数或量〔numerical〕From Latin numerus [number] * see number 源自 拉丁语 numerus [数字] * 参见 number〔teen〕The numbers 13 through 19.13至19:数字从13到19〔decimal〕A number written using the base 10.十进制的数:以10为底的数字〔fifty〕A decade or the numbers from 50 to 59:五十到五十九:从五十到五十九之间的数字或五十到五十九岁之间:〔score〕A result, usually expressed numerically, of a test or examination.成绩得分:一场考试或测试后通常用数字表示的结果〔hexad〕Late Latin hexas hexad- [the number six] 后期拉丁语 hexas hexad- [数字] 〔time〕A number, as of years, days, or minutes, representing such an interval:如年、日或分等代表这一段时间的数字〔magnitude〕A number assigned to a quantity so that it may be compared with other quantities.量值:用来表示数量多少的一个数字,以便和其他数量作比较〔outside〕We have no other information outside the figures already given.除了已提供的这些数字外,我们没有其它信息〔hebdomad〕Latin hebdomas hebdomad- [the number seven] 拉丁语 hebdomas hebdomad- [数字七] 〔thirty〕A decade or the numbers from 30 to 39:30到39的时期或数字,30多:〔groupware〕Software that integrates work on a single project by several concurrent users at separated workstations.群体软件:能够同时使数字在不同工作站的使用者以单一计划将工作整合的软件〔decile〕Any one of the numbers or values in a series dividing the distribution of the individuals in the series into ten groups of equal frequency.十分位数:指把一系列的数字或价格按相等的出现频率分成十组后的其中任何一个数字或价格〔signature〕A letter, number, or symbol placed at the bottom of the first page on each sheet of printed pages of a book as a guide to the proper sequence of the sheets in binding.折标:印在一本书每一印张的第一页底部的一个字母、数字或记号,用于在装订时作为正确次序的指示〔billion〕An indefinitely large number.不确定的大数字〔compute〕To determine an amount or number.计算:计算数量或数字〔arrange〕arranging figures in numerical sequence;按数字序列排列数字〔multiply〕To grow in amount, number, or degree.See Synonyms at increase 增加:在数量、数字或者程度上增长 参见 increase〔digital〕Expressed in digits, especially for use by a computer.数字的:用数字表示,尤其用在计算机上〔second〕The ordinal number matching the number 2 in a series.第二:序数中相当于基数序列中数字2的序数〔numerology〕The study of the occult meanings of numbers and their supposed influence on human life.数字命理学:研究数字的超自然含义和它们对人的生活假定的影响的学科〔positive〕Relating to or designating a quantity, number, angle, or direction opposite to another designated as negative.正向的:关于或表明与另一个表示为负的相反的数量、数字、角度或方向的〔third〕The ordinal number matching the number three in a series.第三个:同一个数列中数字3相对应的数列〔numerary〕from Latin numerus [number] * see number 源自 拉丁语 numerus [数,数字] * 参见 number〔count〕To recite numerals in ascending order up to and including:计数:按上升顺序念数字直到…并包括…:
