释义 | 〔dearth〕from dēore [costly] * see dear 1源自 dēore [昂贵的,代价高的] * 参见 dear1〔artificial〕Simulated refers to what is made to resemble or substitute for another often costlier substance: Simulated 指生产出一种相象的或替代另一种经常是昂贵的东西: 〔Victoria〕The capital of Hong Kong, on the northwest coast of Hong Kong Island. It has extensive shipping facilities and is the seat of the University of Hong Kong (established 1911). Wodehouse,Tales of St. Austin's, there is a mention of a waistcoat that was "push.” The latter may be a different word, but in either case the dates of occurrence are importantbecause they are part of the objection to derivingposh from the initials of "Port Out, Starboard Home.” This was the cooler, and thus more expensive, side of ships traveling between England and India in the mid-19th century, and the acronymPOSH was supposedly stamped on the tickets of first-class passengers traveling on that side of ships owned by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. No evidence is definitely known to exist for this theory, however.TheOxford English Dictionary Supplement may have found a possible source or sources for posh. Another wordposh was 19th- and early 20th-century British slang for "money,” specifically "a halfpenny, cash of small value.”This word is borrowed from the common Romany wordpåšh, "half,” which was used in combinations such aspåšhera, "halfpenny.” Posh, also meaning "a dandy,” is recorded in two dictionaries of slang published in 1890 and 1902,although this particularposh may be still another word. This word or these words, however, are much more likely to be the source ofposh than "Port Out, Starboard Home,” although the latter source certainly has caught the public's etymological fancy.“哦是的,妈妈,我们在那里过着豪华的生活。” 然而这个词及上文提到的那些词比"Port Out,Starboard Home"更有可能是posh 这个词的词源, 虽然后者早被人们确认为这个词的词源〔offload〕"He does come close to offloading some of the blame for the launch on . . . the dear old media"(Meg Greenfield)“他来确实是为推脱由于把昂贵的传播工具转向市场而受的某些谴责”(梅格·格林菲尔德)〔luxury〕Something expensive or hard to obtain.精美昂贵的物品:昂贵或难得之物〔overwhelm〕They overwhelmed us with expensive gifts.他们给予我们大量的昂贵礼物〔pricey〕a pricey restaurant.物价昂贵的饭店〔glamorize〕tried to glamorize the bathroom with expensive fixtures.试着用昂贵的固定物美化浴室〔luxurious〕Of a sumptuous, costly, or rich variety.See Synonyms at sensuous 特等的:豪华的、昂贵的或多种多样的 参见 sensuous〔costly〕Of high price or value; expensive:价格高的,价值高的;昂贵的:〔pricey〕Expensive:价格高的,昂贵的:〔sumptuous〕Of a size or splendor suggesting great expense; lavish:豪华的,华丽的:在尺寸或华丽的外观上显示出昂贵的;花费奢侈的:〔job〕an expensive repair job.昂贵的修理工作〔surprise〕We were astounded at the high cost of traveling in Japan.日本昂贵的旅游费用令我们震惊。〔expensive〕Requiring a large expenditure; costly.费用浩大的:须要大笔开支的;昂贵的〔partiality〕a child with a grown-up partiality for rare and expensive foods.See Synonyms at predilection 一个对稀少的昂贵食物的偏爱不断增长的孩子 参见 predilection〔scent〕an expensive French scent.昂贵的法国香水〔term〕distances expressed in terms of kilometers as well as miles; cheap entertainment, but costly in terms of time wasted.用公里和英里来表示距离;低廉的娱乐,但就浪费的时间来说却极昂贵〔costly〕"Morality is a private and costly luxury" (Henry Adams). “道德是私有的且昂贵的奢侈品” (亨利·亚当斯)。 〔jewel〕A costly ornament of precious metal or gems.金银首饰:珍贵的金属或宝石制成的昂贵装饰品〔cantankerous〕"had to use liquid helium, which is supercold, costly and cantankerous"(Boston Globe)“不得不使用极冷、昂贵且难以处理的液态氦”(波士顿环球)〔preciosity〕from pretiōsus [precious] 源自 pretiōsus [昂贵的] 〔preciosity〕Middle English preciousite [preciousness] 中古英语 preciousite [昂贵] 〔dearth〕from Old English *dēorthu [costliness] 源自 古英语 *dēorthu [昂贵] 〔tony〕Marked by an expensive, luxurious, or exclusive manner or quality.高贵的:以昂贵,豪华或独一无二的态度或品质为特点的〔indulgence〕Sports cars are an expensive indulgence.跑车是一个花费昂贵的嗜好〔lap〕models who were lapped in expensive furs.模特儿穿着昂贵的毛皮大衣〔exclusive〕Catering to a wealthy clientele; expensive:高级的,奢华的:只适合富裕顾客的;昂贵的:〔precious〕Of high cost or worth; valuable.昂贵的:价钱或价值很高的;值钱的 |
