释义 | 〔Dixie〕A region of the southern and eastern United States, usually comprising the states that joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. The term was popularized in the minstrel song "Dixie's Land,” written by Daniel D. Emmett (1815-1904) in 1859.迪克西:美国南部和东部的地区,通常包括那些内战中组成南部邦联的各州。该称呼由滑稽说唱的歌曲“迪克西的土地”而普及,该歌是由丹尼尔·D·艾默特(1815—1904年)于1859年写成的〔Culbertson〕American contract bridge authority whose dominance of international matches and several books, includingThe Contract Bridge Blue Book (1930), helped popularize the card game. 卡伯特森,伊利:(1891-1955) 美国定约桥牌的权威,他在国际性比赛中的优势地位以及著作包括《定约桥牌蓝皮书》 (1930年),促进了这种牌戏的普及 〔Elyot〕English scholar and diplomat who wroteThe Boke Named the Governour (1531), the first English treatise on education, and helped popularize the classics with his translations and Latin-English dictionary (1538). 埃利奥特,托马斯:(1490?-1546) 英国学者和外交家,他编写了第一部英语教育论著《名叫先生的博克》 (1531年),并以其翻译作品和拉丁语-英语字典(1538年)来帮助普及经典名著 〔popular〕Accepted by or prevalent among the people in general:普遍的,普及的:被大众接受的,在大众中流行的:〔popularize〕popularize technical material for a general audience.向广大读者普及技术性刊物〔saving〕There is a widespread tendency to use the formsavings as a singular, as reflected in compounds such assavings account and savings bond ( note by contrast that one would not form compounds likeinvestments account, using an unambiguous plural). But the phrasea savings, though increasingly common, remains unacceptable to 57 percent of the Usage Panel;a saving is the only uncontroversial form. 有将savings 作为单数使用的普及的趋势, 如复合词savings account(储蓄帐户) 和 savings bond(储蓄债券) ( 注意到相比较之下,用并非模棱两可的复数形式是不能组成如investments account 的复合词的)。 但是短语a savings 虽然使用得日渐广泛, 但词语用法小组57%的成员仍不能接受;a saving 仍是不引起争论的唯一形式 〔folklore〕A popular but unfounded belief.宗教:普及但虚幻的信仰〔limerick〕Etymologies can sometimes be a bit disappointing,as, for example, when one is told thatlimerick is named after a city or county in Ireland without being told why it is so named.Unfortunately, we run into a difficulty here that is not uncommonly faced by etymologists, namely, that no one is precisely sure why this piece of humorous verse was so named. One theory is that it was named for a group of poets who wrote in Limerick in the 18th century;another, that it came from a custom at parties of making up a nonsense verse and following it with a chorus of "Will you come up to Limerick.”In any case, the first limericks appeared in books published in 1820 and 1821,and the form was popularized by Edward Lear in a collection published in 1846.The word itself, however, is not recorded until 1896.Let us sum up by saying:"There once was a verse form named limerick./No one can account for the name of it./Some think from a game/Or from poets it came./If you know please come up to Limerick.” 〔Gamow〕Russian-born American nuclear physicist known for his work on radioactivity and genetic information as well as his books popularizing theories of physics.伽莫夫,乔治:(1904-1968) 俄国裔的美国核物理学家,因在射线遗传信息方面的研究和有关普及物理理论的书籍而闻名于世〔err〕The pronunciation (ûr) for the worderr is traditional, but the pronunciation (ĕr) has gained ground in recent years, perhaps owing to influence fromerrant and error, and must now be regarded as an acceptable variant. The Usage Panel was split on the matter:56 percent preferred (ûr),34 percent preferred (ĕr),and 10 percent accepted both pronunciations.err 的一种读音(ur)是较传统的, 近年来, 也许由于errant 和 error 两个词的影响,另一种发音(er)普及起来, err一词现在一定也被认为是errant和error的变异体用法。用法使用小组在该词发音上也有分歧:56%的人赞成(ur),34%的人更喜欢(er),剩下10%的人对两种发音都接受〔Montagu〕British-born American anthropologist whose books, such asThe Natural Superiority of Women (1953), helped popularize anthropology. 蒙塔古,阿什利:(生于 1905) 英裔美国人类学家,其著作如《女性的自然优越性》 (1953年),促进了人类学的普及 〔Jackson〕American singer whose powerful performances and recordings, such as "Move on up a Little Higher" (1945), did much to popularize gospel music among general audiences.杰克逊,迈哈莱:(1911-1972) 美国歌星,其强有力的表演和唱片,如“继续向上移高一点”(1945年),对在民众中普及福音音乐起了很大作用〔spread〕To cause to become widely seen or known; scatter or disseminate:使被广泛看到或知道;散布,普及:〔rife〕In widespread existence, practice, or use; increasingly prevalent.流行的,普遍的:普遍存在、实践或使用的;越来越普及的〔popularity〕The quality or state of being popular, especially the state of being widely admired, accepted, or sought after.普及,流行,通俗性:处于流行或普及状态,尤指广为喜爱、接受或追随的情况〔common〕Widespread; prevalent.普及的;普遍的〔vogue〕Popular acceptance or favor; popularity:流行,风尚,时髦:普遍的接受或喜欢;普及: |
