单词 更远
释义 〔farther〕To or at a more distant or remote point:更远地:到或在更为疏远或遥远的地点:〔worse〕Being further from a standard; less desirable or satisfactory.更不满的:比标准差得更远的;更不合意的或更令人不满的〔farther〕ran farther than the others.比别人跑得更远〔further〕More distant in degree, time, or space:更远的:在程度上更深的、时间上更往前的或空间上更远的:〔up〕Toward or at a point farther along:朝向或位于更远的某个位置:〔ulterior〕Latin [farther] [comparative of] .ulter [on the other side] * see al- 1拉丁语 [更远的] ·ulter的比较级 [在另一面的] * 参见 al- 1〔farther〕Farther and further have been used interchangeably by many writers since the Middle English period. According to a rule of relatively recent origin, however, farther should be reserved for physical distance andfurther for advancement along a nonphysical dimension. Thus 74 percent of the Usage Panel prefersfarther in the sentence If you are planning to drive any farther than Ukiah, you'd better carry chains; whereas 64 percent prefersfurther in the sentence We won't be able to answer these questions until we are further along in our research. In many cases, however, the distinction is not easy to draw.If we may speak metaphorically ofa statement that is far from the truth, for example, the analogous use offarther should be allowed in a sentence such as Nothing could be farther from the truth, though Nothing could be further from the truth is also justifiable. Nothing could be farther from the truth, 而Notting could be futher from the truth 也是对的 〔further〕from furthor [farther] 源自 furthor [更远地] 〔further〕At or to a more distant or advanced point:更远地或再往前地:〔farther〕More distant; remoter:更远的;较远的:〔furthest〕from further [more distant] * see further 源自 further [更远的] * 参见 further〔showcase〕These uses clearly preserve the metaphoric sense of a showcase in which a commodity is displayed to advantage. But other uses of the verb take it further from its original sense. It is used to mean simply "to hold up to admiration,”even when the object is not something that can be hired or purchased: 这些用法很明显地保留了展示商品以获得利益的陈列柜的喻意。但是这个动词的其它一些用法则与其原本意义相差更远,它被用于表示“展示以获得赞赏”的意思,即使物体并不是什么可出租或出售的东西: 〔yonder〕The adverbyonder, from Old English geond, is not exclusively Southern but is more frequently used there than in any other region of the United States, and not only by older or uneducated speakers.Yonder is not merely a Southern synonym for there, which in the South tends to mean "only a few feet from the speaker.”Yonder carries with it an inherent sense of distance farther than "there" and is used if the person or thing indicated can be seen at all: the shed over yonder. Or it might be nearby but completely out of sight, as in the next room.副词yonder ,来自古英语的 geond, 并不是南方专用的,但是比美国任何其它地区都更常用,而且也不仅仅是老人或未受教育者才用它。在南方yonder 并不仅仅是 there 的同义词, 它还表示“距说话者仅几英尺开外”。Yonder 带有比"there"距离更远这一内在的含义, 并用于表示所示的人或事在视线以内: 那边的窝棚 ,或者极为相近但完全在视线以外,如在另一个房间内〔outer〕Farther than another from the center or middle.远离中心的:比在中心处或中间的一个更远〔see〕"If I have seen further (than . . . Descartes) it is by standing upon the shoulders of Giants" (Isaac Newton).“如果我已经(比迪卡尔)看得更远,那是因为我站到了巨人的肩膀上” (伊萨克·牛顿)。〔on〕At or to a more distant point in time or space:稍后地:在或向时间或空间上更远的一点:〔strawberry〕Izaak Walton's 1655 comment,"We may say of Angling as Dr. Boteler said of Strawberries; Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did,”is perhaps the nicest use of the wordstrawberry in its history. This history goes back much further in English to the Old English period when the word is first recorded. We know thatstrawberry was formed during that period from the Old English ancestors of our words straw and berry. What is not known is why the wordstraw is the first part of this compound. One possibility is that the small, one-seeded fruits on the surface of a strawberry resemble fragments of straw. 一种可能是草莓表面小的单个种子状的果实象稻草的碎片〔ferninst〕Ferninst, meaning "opposite, next to, against,” has been attributed to Irish English, brought over during the peak years of Irish immigration to the United States in the mid-19th century. However, other, earlier citations with various spellings date further back: "I walked with them to a room nearly fornent the old state-house" (Davy Crockett). These variant forms are traceable to the American colonial period, when the source of ferninst was probably Scotland or other parts of the British Isles. The term is now dying out; Craig M. Carver, in his book American Regional Dialects, reports that "only nine [ DARE ] informants, all well over sixty-five years of age, used this term.” A derived noun ferninster, meaning "someone who is deliberately contrary,” is also used: "The trouble with the Republican leaders in Congress . . . is that they are just ferninsters" (William Allen White). 是因为他们只是些自相矛盾的人 (威廉·艾伦·怀特) 〔whiffletree〕Whiffletree, a term primarily used in the northeast United States, is derived from an older termwhippletree, which is used in the Upper Northern states farther to the west. The fact thatwhiffletree, the newer term, is used in the Northeast, the older dialect area, illustrates the process of linguistic change. Even as the older wordwhippletree was spreading westward into a new dialect area, it was evolving into something different—whiffletree —in the area where it originated, as if the older dialect area were somehow trying to keep a step ahead.
