The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔summer〕A large, heavy stone usually set on the top of a column or pilaster to support an arch or a lintel.盖顶石:一块巨大、沉重的石头,通常放在柱子或壁柱顶端以支撑穹顶或过梁〔peristyle〕from Greek peristulon [from neuter of] peristulos [surrounded by columns] 源自 希腊语 peristulon 源自peristulos的中性词 [由柱子环绕] 〔stipes〕from Latin [post] 源自 拉丁语 [柱子] 〔muntin〕Middle English mountaunt [upright post or stud] 中古英语 mountaunt [垂直的柱子或壁骨] 〔chamfer〕A furrow or groove, as in a column.沟槽:如柱子上的槽或沟槽〔pilaster〕Latin pīla [pillar] 拉丁语 pīla [柱子] 〔cresset〕A metal cup, often suspended on a pole, containing burning oil or pitch and used as a torch.标灯:一种通常悬挂在柱子上的金属杯,内装有燃油或沥青,被用作火炬〔caryatid〕From Latin Caryātides [maidens of Caryae, caryatids] 源自 拉丁语 Caryātides [凯来埃的少女们,雕成女像的柱子] 〔stockade〕from estaca [stake] 源自 estaca [柱子] 〔scotia〕A hollow concave molding at or near the base of a column.凹圆线:在柱子底座或接近底座部位的空的凹边装饰〔panel〕The space or section in a fence or railing between two posts.栅栏或两个柱子的横木的空间或部分〔term〕A stone or post marking a boundary, especially a squared and downward-tapering pillar adorned with a head and upper torso.界标:标志一边界的石头或柱子,尤指一圆柱形、底部渐细、上饰有胸像的柱子〔pillar〕A slender, freestanding, vertical support; a column.柱子,支柱:细长、独撑的垂直支撑物;柱子〔tie〕tied the kite to a post; tie up a bundle.把风筝拴到柱子上;捆成一束〔Maypole〕A pole decorated with streamers that those celebrating May Day hold while dancing.五朔节花柱:饰有飘带的柱子,五朔节时人们持飘带围此柱舞蹈〔perch〕from Latin pertica [stick, pole] 源自 拉丁语 pertica [棍子,柱子] 〔colonnade〕A structure composed of columns placed at regular intervals.柱廊:由有规则间隔排列柱子构成的建筑结构〔gallows〕A device usually consisting of two upright posts supporting a crossbeam from which a noose is suspended and used for execution by hanging; a gallows tree.绞刑架:一种装置,通常包括支撑一根悬挂绞索的横梁的两根直立柱子,用于执行绞刑;绞刑架〔paling〕One of a row of upright, pointed sticks forming a fence; a pale.桩:做栅栏用的直立带尖的一排棍中的一个;柱子〔pillory〕probably from Latin pīla [pillar] 可能源自 拉丁语 pīla [柱子] 〔jamb〕One of a pair of vertical posts or pieces that together form the sides of a door, window frame, or fireplace, for example.侧柱:合在一起组成门、窗框或壁炉等的两侧的一对竖直的柱子或木条中的一个〔bitt〕A vertical post, usually one of a pair, set on the deck of a ship and used to secure ropes or cables.系缆柱:垂直的柱子,常为一对中的一个,固定在船的甲板上,用于系住绳子或缆绳〔statement〕Glass, exposed beams, and antiques all combine to make a strong decorative statement.将玻璃、裸露的柱子和古董结合在一起制造出强烈的装饰效果〔colonnade〕A series of columns placed at regular intervals.列柱:以规则间隔排列的一列柱子〔ticket〕from Old French estiquet [post serving as a target in certain sports] 源自 古法语 estiquet [在某些体育运动中用作目标的柱子] 〔compile〕pīla [heap (of stones), pillar] pīla [(石头)堆,柱子] |
