单词 汲取
释义 〔draft〕The drawing of a liquid, as from a cask or keg.汲取汲取液体,如从桶中〔wrest〕wrest the meaning from an obscure poem.从一首晦涩的诗里汲取含义〔haustorium〕from Latin haustus [a drawing in, absorption] [from past participle of] haurīre [to draw up] 源自 拉丁语 haustus [吸入,吸收] 源自haurīre的过去分词 [汲取] 〔draw〕drew strength from their religious faith.从他们的宗教信仰中汲取力量〔lade〕To take up or remove (water) with a ladle or dipper.用长柄勺子或戽斗将(水)舀去或汲取〔garland〕received garlands of praise from the critics.从批评中汲取表示赞扬的标志〔broach〕To draw off (a liquid) by piercing a hole in a cask or other container.钻孔汲取:通过在桶或其它容器上钻孔来汲取(液体)〔tapster〕One who draws and serves liquor for customers; a bartender.从酒桶中汲取酒并端给顾客的人;酒店侍者〔quark〕"Three quarks for Muster Mark! / Sure he hasn't got much of a bark / And sure any he has it's all beside the mark.” This passage of James Joyce'sFinnegans Wake is part of a scurrilous 13-line poem directed against King Mark, the cuckolded husband in the Tristan legend. The poem and the accompanying prose are packed with names of birds and words suggestive of birds, and the poem is a squawk, like the cawing of a crow, against King Mark. Thus, Joyce uses the wordquark, which comes from the standard English verbquark, meaning "to caw, croak,” and also from the dialectal verb quawk, meaning"to caw, screech like a bird.” But Joyce'squark was not what it has become: "any of a group of hypothetical subatomic particles proposed as the fundamental units of matter.”Murray Gell-Mann, the physicist who proposed these particles, in a private letter of June 27, 1978, to the editor of theOxford English Dictionary, said that he had actually been influenced by Joyce's word in naming the particle, although the influence was subconscious at first.Gell-Mann was thinking of using the pronunciation (kwôrk) for the particle, possibly something he had picked up fromFinnegans Wake, which he "had perused from time to time since it appeared in 1939. . . . The allusion to three quarks seemed perfect" (originally there were only three subatomic quarks).Gell-Mann, however, wanted to pronounce the word with (ô) not (ä), as Joyce seemed to indicate by rhyming words in the vicinity such asMark. Gell-Mann got around that "by supposing that one ingredient of the line ‘Three quarks for Muster Mark’was a cry of ‘Three quarts for Mister . . . ’ heard in H.C. Earwicker's pub.” 呕出(汲取的物质)或呕吐〔draft〕Drawn from a large container, such as a keg.散装的,直接汲取的:从一个大容器中汲取的,如酒桶〔haustellum〕from haurīre [to draw up] 源自 haurīre [汲取] 〔squeeze〕To press hard on or together; compress.榨取,汲取:在…之上用力压或压在一起压缩〔extract〕trahere [to draw] trahere [汲取] 〔effete〕The fact thateffete has come to mean "effeminate" marks a return to its etymological roots. Effete came into English from the Latin wordeffētus, made up ofex-, "out,” and the adjective fētus, "having recently given birth,” which is related to the nounfētus, "offspring,” a word we have borrowed as well. Latineffētus was used of plants that had borne fruit or of animals that had borne young, buteffētus could also mean "worn out with bearing young, exhausted, feeble.” The English wordeffete, whose earliest appearance is recorded in 1621, was first used in senses similar or identical to senses of Latineffētus ; however, in the last two centuries or so the senses "characterized by weakness or decadence" and "overrefined, effeminate,” have appeared.Botheffeminate and effete go back to the same Indo-European root, dhē(i)-, meaning "to suck.” Ineffeminate we see the development from a form of the root meaning literally "she who suckles"; ineffete, the development from a form of the root that refers to the baby who sucks milk from the mother.
