释义 | 〔flee〕To pass swiftly away; vanish:飞逝:迅速消失;消亡:〔enthusiasm〕When the English philospher Henry More stated in a work published in 1660 that "If ever Christianity be exterminated, it will be by Enthusiasme,”he clearly used the word differently from the way we do now.He was also using a meaning that differed from the first sense, "possession by a god,” recorded in English (1603). Enthusiasm and this sense of the word go back to the Greek wordenthousiasmos, which ultimately comes from the adjectiveentheos, "having the god within,” formed fromen-, "in, within,” and theos, "god.” Henry More in 1660 was referring to belief, either mistaken or unsupported by evidence, in one's own inspiration by the Christian God. Enthusiasm, as now most frequently used, has become secularized and at times weakened,so that one can speak of an enthusiasm for fast cars. Enthusiasm 现在被经常使用,它的含义已脱离宗教的影响并不断弱化,现在我们可以说对开快车的狂热〔perish〕"Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish"(A.J. Balfour)“人最终会入土,他所有的思想也将随之而消亡”(A.J.贝尔福)〔quietism〕A form of Christian mysticism enjoining passive contemplation and the beatific annihilation of the will.寂静主义:基督教神秘主义的一种形式,禁止消极的冥思以及意志极乐的消亡〔nirvana〕Sanskrit nirvāṇam [a blowing out, extinction, nirvana] 梵文 nirvāṇam [熄灭,消亡,超脱] 〔Sabellian〕A group of extinct Italic languages that includes Sabine.萨贝利语组:一组已消亡的意大利人的语言,其中包括萨宾语〔Venetic〕An extinct Indo-European language known from short inscriptions in Veneto dating from the sixth to the first centuriesb.c. and possibly belonging to the Italic branch. 凡内提客语:现已消亡的印欧语言,从在威尼托发现的公元前 六至一世纪的简短碑铭中得知该语言的存在,可能属于古意大利语分支 〔Massachusett〕A Native American people formerly located along Massachusetts Bay from Plymouth north to Salem. Reduced by epidemics, the Massachusett ceased to exist as a people during the 17th century. His harsh rule as military governor of New Orleans (May-December 1862) led to charges of corruption and Butler's removal. He later opened the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson (1868). 后来他展开了对安德鲁·约翰逊总统的弹劾活动(1868年)〔trace〕Vestige refers to a surviving remnant of what once existed or is past: Vestige 用来指保存下来的曾经存在或现已消亡事物的残余: 〔showcase〕In these last two usages the verb no longer has any connection to the idea of a showcase, nor does it retain any hint of its theatrical character. The development of the verb nicely exemplifies the process whereby metaphors are eviscerated after death.
