The word is first recorded in English in 1690 in the formcatchup, in 1711 in the formketchup, and in 1730 in the formcatsup. These three spelling variants of a foreign borrowing remain current.ketchup 这个外来词的三种不同拼法现在都通行〔tomato〕A widely cultivated South American plant(Lycopersicon esculentum) having edible, fleshy, usually red fruit. 意大利式番茄大蒜调味汁;淡菜番茄大蒜调味汁〔tamarillo〕A tree(Cyphomandra betacea) native to the Peruvian Andes and cultivated especially in New Zealand for its edible dark red or yellow plumlike fruit. 番茄树:一种原产于秘鲁境内安第斯山脉的树木(树番茄 树番茄属) ,因其结可供食用的深红或黄色李子状果实而在新西兰被广泛种植 〔cannelloni〕Large-sized tubes of pasta stuffed with meat or cheese and baked in a tomato or cream sauce.烤空心粉:塞肉或干酪并加番茄或奶油汁烘烤而成的大空心粉条〔guacamole〕A thick paste of mashed avocado, often seasoned with tomato, peppers, or other condiments and usually served as a dip or in salads.
