释义 | 〔that〕This last sentence would be ambiguous ifthat were omitted, since the adverbeventually could then be construed as modifying either argues or will increase. See Usage Note at doubt ,this ,whatever ,which ,who 最后一句话中如果that 被省略,句子将变得模棱而可, 因为副词eventually 可以被解释为修饰 argues or will increase 参见 doubt, this, whatever, which, who〔enthymeme〕A syllogism in which one of the premises or the conclusion is not stated explicitly.三段论省略式:某个前题或结论未被清楚陈述的三段论〔skip〕To pass from point to point, omitting or disregarding what intervenes:略过:省略或忽视干涉的东西,从一点到另一点通过:〔consensus〕Many grammarians have maintained that the expressionconsensus of opinion is redundant, inasmuch asconsensus itself denotes a judgment about which there is general agreement. Consensus of opinion has often been used by reputable writers, however, and has sometimes been defended on the grounds that a consensus may involve attitudes other than opinions;thus, one may speak of aconsensus of beliefs, or a consensus of usage. Nonetheless, the qualifying phrase can usually be omitted with no loss of clarity. The sentenceIt was the consensus of opinion among the sportswriters that the game should not have been played says nothing that is not said by 许多语法学家都认为短语consensus of opinion 这个说法是罗唆的, 因为consensus 本身就表示一种得到大多数同意的意见。 然而consensus of opinion 仍常常被知名作家所使用, 并且有时人们会辩解说它除了意见上的一致外可能还包括态度上的一致;因此,我们可以说consensus of beliefs(信仰一致) 或 consensus of usage(用法一致)。 尽管这样,限定性短语通常可以被省略而不会使表达不清楚。如体育新闻记者们的一致意见是这场比赛本不应该进行的 这个句子并不比 〔clip〕To shorten (a word or words) by leaving out letters or syllables.省略,简略:通过去除字母或音节来缩短(单词)〔break〕A series of three dots ( . . . ) used to indicate an omission in a text.省略号:三个点(…),用来表示文本的省略〔retrench〕To remove, delete, or omit.除去、删除或省略〔identify〕In the sense "to associate or affiliate (oneself) closely with a person or group,”identify has developed two distinct subsenses. In one, the verb suggests a psychological empathy with the feelings or experiences of another person,as inMost young readers readily identify (or identify themselves ) with Holden Caulfield. This usage derives originally from psychoanalytic writing, where it has a specific technical sense, but like other terms from that field,it was widely regarded as jargon when introduced into the wider discourse. In particular, critics seized on the fact that in this sense the verb was often used intransitively, with no reflexive pronoun. As Wilson Follett wrote in 1966,"The critic . . . could help restore the true notion in these words if he would give upidentifying at large and resume identifying himself with Ivan Karamazov, Don Quixote, Mary Poppins, or whomever.” In recent years, however, this use ofidentify with without the reflexive has become a standard locution. Eighty-two percent of the Usage Panel accepts the sentenceI find it hard to identify with any of his characters; whereas only 63 percent now accepts this same usage when the reflexive pronoun is used,as inI find it hard to identify myself with any of his characters. · Omission of the reflexive with this use ofidentify serves among other things to distinguish it from use of the verb to mean "to associate (oneself) with the goals, interests, or principles of a group.” This use of the verb can be traced back to the 18th century, but it is now somewhat less acceptable to the Panel than the first sense under discussion:58 percent of the Panel accepts the sentenceShe identified herself with the campaign against drug abuse, and only 40 percent acceptsShe identified with the campaign against drug abuse, where no reflexive pronoun is used. I find it hard to identify myself with any of his characters。 省略反身代词以及其它一些方法,使identify 这种用法区别于它作为动词在“与某个集团的目标、利益或原则相联系”一句中的意思。 它作为动词的用法可追溯到18世纪,不过对于用法专题小组来说它没有第一种解释那样被易于接受:58%的小组成员接受她支持反对滥用药物的运动 这一说法, 只有40%的成员接受不要反身代词的She identified with the campaign against drug abuse 这一说法 〔skip〕An act of passing over something; an omission.跳过,省略:越过某物的动作;省略〔ellipsis〕The omission of a word or phrase necessary for a complete syntactical construction but not necessary for understanding.省略:一个从句法来说是必要的,而从理解来说是不必要的单词或词组的省略〔pretermit〕To fail to do or include; omit.省略:没有做或没包括在内;省略,忽视〔curtail〕To cut short; abbreviate.See Synonyms at shorten 截短;省略 参见 shorten〔leave〕To omit or exclude:舍去:省略或排除:〔that〕thanI take it that she has passed the test. Thatshould not be omitted, however, when the subordinate clause begins with an adverbial phrase or any element other than the subject: 好于I take it that she has passed the test。 然而,当从句以副词短语开头或其它不是主语的成份开头时,that不能省略: 〔torso〕A statue of the human body with the head and limbs omitted or removed.躯干雕塑:省略或除去四肢的人体躯干的雕塑〔dispense〕To manage without; forgo:省略,放弃:没有…也行;放弃:〔preterition〕The act of passing by, disregarding, or omitting.省略,忽视,遗漏〔that〕Used to introduce an elliptical exclamation of desire:引导表示渴望的省略感叹词:〔elide〕To omit or slur over (a syllable, for example) in pronunciation.省略:在发音时省略或忽略(例如,一个音节)〔else〕No one else but Sam saw the accident (omit else ). · 除了山姆没有别人看到这起事故(省略 else ), 〔ought〕In questions and negative sentences, especially those with contractions,to is also sometimes omitted: 在疑问句和否定句中,尤其是带缩写的这些句子中,to 有时也会被省略: 〔subaudition〕from subaudītus [past participle of] subaudīre [to supply an omitted word] 源自 subaudītus subaudīre的过去分词 [提供一省略的词] 〔than〕Since the 18th centurygrammarians have insisted thatthan should be regarded as a conjunction in all its uses, so that a sentence such asBill is taller than Tom should be construed as an elliptical version of the sentence Bill is taller than Tom is. According to this view, the case of a pronoun followingthan is determined by whether the pronoun serves as the subject or object of the verb that is "understood.” Thus, the standard rule requiresPat is taller than I (not me ) on the assumption that this sentence is elliptical forPat is taller than I am but allowsThe news surprised Pat more than me, since this sentence is taken as elliptical forThe news surprised Pat more than it surprised me. However, than is quite commonly treated as a preposition when followed by an isolated noun phrase, and as such occurs with a pronoun in the objective case:John is taller than me. Though this usage is still widely regarded as incorrect,it is predominant in speechand has reputable literary precedent. It is also consistent with the fact thatthan is clearly treated as a preposition in the than whom construction, as ina poet than whom (not than who ) no one has a dearer place in the hearts of his countrymen. Still, the writer who risks a sentence such asMary is taller than him in formal writing must be prepared to defend the usage against objections of critics who are unlikely to be dissuaded from their conviction that the usage is incorrect. · Comparatives usingas . . . as can be analyzed in a parallel way to those using than. Traditional grammarians insist thatI am not as tall as he is the only correct form, and though both literary precedent and syntactic arguments can be marshaled in support of the analysis of the secondas as a preposition (which would license I am not as tall as him ), one should treat this use ofas as a conjunction in formal writing. See Usage Note at as 1自18世纪以来,语法学家坚持以为than 在其所有用法中均应被看作连词, 因此,在诸如Bill is taller than Tom 的句子中应解释为句子 Bill is taller than Tom is 的省略说法。 根据这一观点,than 后跟随代词的情况取决于该代词作为所“理解”的动词的主语还是谓语。 这样,标准规则要求Pat is taller than I (而不是 me ), 考虑到这个句子是Pat is taller than I am 的省略, 但允许The news surprised Pat more than me , 因为这个句子被认当是The news surprised Pat more than it surprised me 的省略。 然而,当than 跟随一个独立名词短语时常被看作是介词, 如代词用于宾语的情况:John is taller than me 。 尽管这种用法仍然被广泛认为是错误的,但它仍在口语中占主要地位,并且有著名的文学先例。它也符合than 在 than whom 结构中显然被认为是介词的事实, 就象在a poet than whom (而不是 than who ) no one has a dearer place in the hearts of his countrymen 。 然而,冒险在正式写作中应用诸如Mary is taller than him 的作者必须准备针对那些不可能被劝服放弃坚信这种用法是错误的批评家们的反对意见而对此种用法进行辩护。 用比较级as…as 可以用与 than 相同的方式进行分析。 传统的语法学家坚持认为I am not as tall as he 是唯一正确的形式, 尽管文学先例和语法规则都能支持第二个as 作为介词(即允许 I am not as tall as him )的分析, 我们仍应该把这个as 作为正式写作中的连词 参见 as1〔elision〕The act or an instance of omitting something.删除:省略某物的行为或事件〔leik〕To leave.离开,留下,省略,交给,放弃.〔chirren〕The linguistic process of ellipsis allows for the deletion within words of some internal sounds, such as weakly stressed syllables and less prominent consonants. This process caused Old Englishheafod ultimately to become Modern English head, losing its internal v sound (spelled f in Old English). Ellipsis is still an active process in American regional dialects. For example, inchirren both the l and the d of children are omitted in favor of the more conspicuous r. 轻音和次要辅音等语言上的省略过程造成单词某些内部音素的缺乏。这一过程导致古英语中的heafod 省略词中内部音素 V (古英语中拼写成 f )而最终变成现代英语中 head 一词。 在美国的地区方言中活力过程仍然起着作用。例如,为了在chirren 一词中突出更显著的音素 r ,将 children 中的 l 和 d 两个音素都省略了 〔asyndeton〕The omission of conjunctions from constructions in which they would normally be used, as in连词的省略:在构造句子成分中经常使用的连词的省略,如:〔outride〕An unstressed syllable or cluster of syllables within a given metrical unit that is omitted from the scansion pattern in sprung rhythm.一音部内的轻音节:跳韵中按轻重韵律念时被省略的一个既定音步里的非重读音节或音群〔umpire〕The anguished, hostile cry "Kill the ump" could have been "kill the nump" had it not been for the linguistic process known as false splitting or juncture loss.In the case ofumpire we can almost see the process in action if we study the Middle English Dictionary entry for noumpere, the Middle English ancestor of our word. Noumpere comes from the Old French nonper, made up ofnon, "not,” and per, "equal,” as is someone who is requested to act as arbiter of a dispute between two people; that is, the arbiter is not paired with one of them.In Middle English the earliest recorded form isnoumper (about 1350). The earliest dated form without ann in the entry is owmpere ( a Middle English variant spelling),in a text composed in 1440.How then was lost can be seen if we compare the sequence a noounpier in a text written in 1426-1427 with the sequence an Oumper from a text written probably around 1475. Then of noumpere became attached to the indefinite article, giving usan instead of a and, eventually, umpire instead of .numpire. noumpere 中的 n 变得和不定冠词连在一起, 成为an 而非 n , 最后就出现了umpire 而不是 ·numpire 〔foreshorten〕To reduce the length of; curtail or abridge.缩短,省略:减少…的长度;削减,缩短〔contraction〕A word, aswon't from will not, or phrase, as o'clock from of the clock, formed by omitting or combining some of the sounds of a longer phrase. 缩约词:通过省略或结合一个较长短语中的某些音素而形成的词,如从will not 来的 won't ,或短语如从 of the clock 来的 o'clock 〔so〕But this rule is best regarded as a stylistic preference;in such clausesthat is frequently omitted even by reputable writers in formal contexts, as inThey will have to double up so (or so that ) room can be found for the new arrivals. · Bothso and so that are acceptably used to introduce clauses that state a result or consequence: 但是这条规则最好被认为是格式上的偏好。在这样的句子中,即使是很著名的作家也在正式的文章中经常省略that , 如在句子他们将不得不两个人睡一张床,以便 (或者 so that ) 新到的人能找到住房 。 So 和 so that 都可以被接受用来引入陈述一个结果或后果的从句: 〔mutt〕Clipping not of sheep but of a word having to do with sheep has given us our termmutt for a mongrel dog. Clipping or abbreviating words, a standard process of word formation, shearedmutt from muttonhead, a pejorative term meaning "a stupid person,”based on the notion that sheep are stupid.Mutt in its first recorded use in 1901 is used in the same senses asmuttonhead, but it is soon recorded (1904)as a term of contempt for a horseand then (1906) for a dog.We can be reasonably certain that theNew Yorker critic writing in 1970 that "The cast includes a Sheepdog . . . a Mutt Bitch,” had no awareness that a sheepdog would make the ideal mutt. 狗杂种”就没有意识到牧羊狗也可以表示十足的狗杂种之意〔elision〕Omission of an unstressed vowel or syllable, as in scanning a verse.非重读元音或音节的省略,例如在标出诗歌格律时〔leik〕Basic form*leik w- . eclipse , ellipsis , from Greek leipein , to leave. 基本形式*leik w- . eclipse , ellipsis , 源自 希腊语 leipein , 省略. 〔that〕The standard rule isthatthat should be used only to introduce a restrictive (or "defining") relative clause, which serves to identify the entity being talked about;in this useit should never be preceded by a comma. Thus, we sayThe house that Jack built has been torn down, where the clausethat Jack built tells which house was torn down, orI am looking for a book that is easy to read, wherethat is easy to read tells what kind of book is desired. Onlywhich is to be used with nonrestrictive (or "nondefining") clauses, which give additional information about an entity that has already been identified in the context;in this use, which is always preceded by a comma. Thus, we sayThe students in Chemistry 10 have been complaining about the textbook, which (not that ) is hard to follow. The clausewhich is hard to follow does not indicate which text is being complained about; even if it were omitted,we would know that the phrasethe textbook refers to the text in Chemistry 10. The use ofthat in nonrestrictive clauses like this, though once common in writing and still frequent in speech,is best avoided in formal style. ·Some grammarians have argued that symmetry requires thatwhich should be used only in nonrestrictive clauses, asthat is to be used only in restrictive clauses. Thus, they suggest that we should avoid sentences such asI need a book which will tell me all about city gardening, where the clausewhich will tell me all about city gardening indicates which sort of book is needed. Such use ofwhich is useful where two or more relative clauses are joined by and or or, as inIt is a philosophy in which the common man may find solace and which many have found reason to praise. Which is also preferred to introduce a restrictive relative clausewhen the preceding phrase itself contains athat, as inI can only give you that which I don't need (not that that I don't need ) or We want to assign only that book which will be most helpful (preferred tothat book that will be most helpful ). · That may be omitted in a relative clause when the subject of the clause is different from the referent of the phrase preceding the clause. Thus, we may say eitherthe book that I was reading or the book I was reading, where the subject of the clause (I ) is not the referent of the phrase the book. Omission ofthat in these cases has sometimes been described as incorrect, but the practice is extremely common and has ample precedent in reputable writing. ·There have also been occasional objections to the omission ofthat in its use to introduce a subordinate clause, as inI think we should try again. But this usage is entirely idiomatic and is in fact favored with some of the verb phrases that can introduce such clauses:thus, one would more normally write 标准规则中,that 应只被用于引导限定性(或“确定的”)关系从句, 这些从句用于明确正被谈论的实体;在这种情况下,前面决不能有逗号。因此,我们说杰克建的房子已经拆毁了 , 在这里,从句杰克所建的 指明哪幢房子被拆毁了, 或者我正在找一本易读的书 , 在这里,易读的 指明哪类书是需要的。 只有which 用于非限定性(或“不确定的”)从句中, 为已经在上下文中定义的实体提供附加信息;在此用法中,which 之前总有逗号。 因此,我们说化学10班的学生一直在抱怨这课本,实在 (不是 that ) 是太难懂了 。 从句which is hard to follow 并不指明哪一课本被抱怨; 即使它被省略,我们也知道the textbook 指化学10班的课本。 Which 也用作引导限定性关系从句,在当前置短语中含有that 时, 如我只能给你我不需要的东西 (不是 that that I don't need )或 我们只想分发那本最用的书 (好于that book that will be most helpful )。 当从句主语与从句前短语所指不一致时,that 在关系从句中可以省略。 因此,我们可以说the book that I was reading 或者 the book I was reading 。 在这里,从句主语(I )和短语 the book 的主语不同。 在这些情况下,that 的省略有时被认为是错误的, 但是这在实际中极普遍而且在规范写作中有充分的先例。对于that 用于引导从句时被省略偶然持有异议, 如在我认为我们应该再试一次 中。 但这种用法完全符合语法而且实际上有一些引导这样从句的短语支持;因此,可以正常应用 〔ellipsis〕An example of such omission.这种省略的一个例子〔open〕Designating a method of punctuation in which commas and other marks are used sparingly.少用标点符号的:在不引起混淆的情况下可能时省略逗号和其他符号的〔depend〕Depend, indicating condition or contingency, is always followed byon or upon, as inIt depends on who is in charge. Omission of the preposition is typical of casual speech.Depend 指条件或可能性, 其后通常跟有on 或者 upon , 例如这取决于谁是负责人 。 在非正式口语中,通常省略介词〔blank〕A mark, usually a dash (—), indicating the omission of a word or of a letter or letters.省略符号:一标记,通常为破折号(—),指一个单词或字母的省略 |
