The first recorded use ofapartheid as an English term, in the Cape Times on October 24, 1947, is an ironic commentary on much of the word's use since then: "Mr. Hofmeyr said apartheid could not be reconciled with a policy of progress and prosperity for South Africa.” According to the March 15, 1961, issue of theLondon Times, the wordself-development was supposed to replace apartheid as the official term used by the South African Broadcasting Corporation for "the Government's race policies. ” And inMove Your Shadow, published in 1985, Joseph Lelyveld says that the "word is [now] shunned, even resented by the [National Party's] high priests as if it were an epithet fashioned by the country's enemies.” Butapartheid as a word and as a reality has been slow to disappear. The history ofapartheid, however, offers a possible model for change in this policy, for the word is an example of a mixture and combination of resources, in this case linguistic.Apartheid is an English word that came into South African English from Afrikaans, the language of the Dutch settlers of South Africa. They in turn had made up the word from the Dutch wordapart, "separate,” and the suffix -heid, which corresponds to our suffix -hood. Thusapartheid literally means "separateness.” The Dutch had earlier borrowed the wordapart, as did we, from the French phrase à part, meaning "to one side.” 荷兰人较早地借用了apart 一词,就如我们从法语里借用了意为“到一边”的 a part 一样 〔rustle〕To move with soft fluttering or crackling sounds.发出瑟瑟声:沙沙作响的或发出辟啪声的移动〔hop〕To move with light bounding skips or leaps.跳:轻快而富有弹性地跳跃着移动〔move〕To cause to go from one place to another:使…移动:导致从一个位置移到另一个位置:〔passage〕A movement from one place to another, as by going by, through, over, or across; transit or migration.通过:从一处到另一处的移动,如经过、穿过、越过或横穿;转移或迁移〔heave〕To move a ship in a certain direction or into a certain position by hauling:拖拉:通过拖拉使船朝某一方向移动或使之到达某一位置:〔bumble〕To move or proceed clumsily.See Synonyms at blunder 踉跄:笨拙地移动或前行 参见 blunder〔brush〕A sliding connection completing a circuit between a fixed and a moving conductor.电刷:连接一个固定的导体和移动的导体,使电路通畅的滑动物体〔sashay〕To move in a sideways manner.侧动:向边侧移动〔draw〕To move or pull so as to cover or uncover something:拉起来:移动或拉动以盖上或暴露出某物:〔zugzwang〕A situation in a chess game in which a player is forced to make an undesirable or disadvantageous move. 迫移:在象棋比赛中,一方被迫作出不情愿或不利的移动的情况〔wind〕Moving air, especially a natural and perceptible movement of air parallel to or along the ground.风:移动的空气,尤指与地面平行或沿地面空气的自然且可察觉的移动〔flounce〕To move with exaggerated or affected motions:急跳,猛跳:动作夸张或装模作样地移动:〔momentum〕from movēre [to move] * see meuə- 源自 movēre [移动] * 参见 meuə- 〔slow〕Not moving or able to move quickly; proceeding at a low speed:慢的,缓慢的:移动不迅速的或不能迅速移动的;低速前进的:〔heave〕To move in a certain direction or to a specified position:移动:朝某一方向或某一特定位置移动:〔kinesthesia〕Greek kinein [to move] * see kei- 2希腊语 kinein [移动] * 参见 kei- 2〔locomotion〕The act of moving from place to place.移动:从地方移向地方的行为〔slip〕Movement between two parts where none should exist, as between a pulley and a belt.移动:两个部件之间不该有的运动,如滑轮和皮带之间〔lumber〕To walk or move with heavy clumsiness.See Synonyms at blunder 沉重地移动 参见 blunder〔radial〕Moving or directed along a radius.沿着或向着半径移动的 |
