单词 词形
释义 〔backward〕The adverb may be spelledbackward or backwards, and the forms are interchangeable: 这个副词可以被拼写为backward 或者 backwards, 两种词形是可以互换的: 〔vogue〕The history of the wordvogue takes us back from the abstract world of fashion to the concrete actions of moving in a vehicle and rowing a boat, demonstrating how sense can change dramatically over time even though it flows, as it were, in the same channel. The history ofvogue begins with the Indo-European root .wegh-, meaning "to go, transport in a vehicle.” Among many other forms derived from this root was the Germanic stem.wēga-, "water in motion.” From this stem came the Old Low German verbwogōn, meaning "to sway, rock.” This verb passed into Old French asvoguer, which meant "to sail, row.” The Old French word yielded the nounvogue, which probably literally meant "a rowing,” and so "a course,” and figuratively "reputation" and then "reputation of fashionable things" or "prevailing fashion,” which involve courses, so to speak. The French passed the noun on to us,it being first recorded in English in 1571.vogue 法语把这个名词传给我们,于1571年最早被录入英语〔nonchalant〕A nonchalant person is not likely to become warm or heated about anything,a fact that is underscored by the etymology of the wordnonchalant. Non-,the first part of the word, is easy to spot as a familiar negative prefix;since this word was formed in Old French,we havenon-, the Old French descendant of Latin nōn-. The second element, chalant, is the Old French present participle of the verb chaloir, meaning "to be concerned.”This in turn came from the Latin wordcalēre, which from its concrete sense "to be hot or warm" developed the figurative sense "to be roused or fired with hope, zeal, or anger.”Obviously the Old French verbchaloir has lost some of the warmth of Latin calēre, but then, the nonchalant person has little warmth or concern. The wordnonchalant is first recorded in English before 1734, although Frenchnonchalance, a derivative of French nonchalant, seems to have entered English first. Englishnonchalance is first recorded in 1678. 英语中的nonchalance 于1678年第一次被记录下来 〔decline〕from Latin dēclīnāre [to turn away, bend downward, change the form of a word] 源自 拉丁语 dēclīnāre [转过脸,向下弯曲,改变词形] 〔case〕A pattern of inflection of nouns, pronouns, and adjectives to express different syntactic functions in a sentence.词形变化形式:名词、代词和形容词在一个句子中表示不同的句法功能的词形屈折变化的形式〔genitive〕A form or construction in this case.所有格词(或结构):这种所有格的一个词形或句法结构〔dive〕Eitherdove or dived is acceptable as the past tense of dive. Dived is actually the earlier form, and the emergence ofdove may appear anomalous in light of the general tendencies of change in English verb forms. Old English had two classes of verbs:strong verbs, whose past tense was indicated by a change in their vowel (a process that survives in such present-day English verbsasdrive/drove or fling/flung ); and weak verbs, whose past was formed with a suffix related to-ed in Modern English (as in present-day Englishlive/lived and move/moved ). Since the Old English period, many verbs have changed from the strong pattern to the weak one;for example, the past tense ofhelp, formerly healp, became helped, and the past tense ofstep, formerly stop, became stepped. Over the years, in fact, the weak pattern has become so prevalentthat we use the termregular to refer to verbs that form their past tense by suffixation of -ed. However, there have occasionally been changes in the other direction:the past tense ofwear, now wore, was once werede ; that ofspit, now spat, was once spitede ; and the development ofdove is an additional example of the small group of verbs that have swum against the historical tide. dove 或 dived 都可用作 dive的过去式形式。 命令式,命令词,命令语气:用来表达命令的单词、语气或词形〔barbarism〕A specific word, form, or expression so used.不合语法的表达:不正确或不规则使用的词语、词形或表达法〔barbarism〕The use of words, forms, or expressions considered incorrect or unacceptable.不合语法:不正确的或不规则的词语、词形和表达法的运用〔dual〕An inflected form of a noun, adjective, pronoun, or verb used with two items or people.双数格:用于两个物体或人时名词、形容词、代词或动词的曲折变化词形〔whatever〕Bothwhatever and what ever can be used in sentences such as Whatever (or What ever ) made her say that? Critics have occasionally objected to the one-word form, but it is supported by extensive precedent in reputable writing. The same is true of the formswhoever, whenever, wherever, and however when these expressions are used similarly. In adjectival uses only the one-word form is used:Take whatever (not what ever ) books you need. ? When a clause beginning withwhatever is the subject of a sentence, no comma should be used: Whatever you do is right. Otherwise, a comma may be used:Whatever you do, don't burn the toast. ? When the phrase preceding a restrictive clause is introduced bywhichever or whatever, that should not be used in formal writing. It is regarded as incorrect to writewhatever book that you want to look at; one should write insteadWhatever book you want to look at will be sent to your office or Whichever book costs less (not that costs less ) is fine with us. See Usage Note at however ,that whatever 和 what ever 这两个词都可用在例如 Whatever (或 What ever ) made her say that?(究竟是什么使得她说那样的话?) 这样的句子里。 批评家们经常反对单一词形,但有声望作品的大量先例却支持了单词形式。同样地,当whoever, whenever, wherever 及 however 这些表述被用于类似情况时,其情形也是如此。 用作定语时只用单词形式:Take whatever (不是 what ever ) books you need。(拿那些你要的书) ? whatever 为句首的从句作句子主语时,不能用逗号: Whatever you do is right(无论你做什么都是对的)。 在其他情况可以用逗号:Whatever you do, don't burn the toast(不管你做什么,不要烤糊了吐司) ? 当先于一限定性从句的短语是由whichever 或 whatever引入时, that不能用在正式文体中。 这样的句子:whatever book that you want to look at(无论哪本你想看的书) 是被看作不正确的; 相反应该是Whatever book you want to look at will be sent to your office(你想看的任何一本书都将会送到你的办公室去) 或者 Whichever book costs less (不是 that costs less ) is fine with us(花费少一些的书比较适合我们) 参见 however, that〔mannequin〕A department store mannequin is often not a man and often not little, yetmannequin goes back to the Middle Dutch word mannekijn, the diminutive form ofman. Of course we must consider the fact thatman in Dutch, as in English, has often been used to mean "person.” As for the size of a mannequin, the Middle Dutch word could mean "dwarf" but in Modern Dutch developed the specialized sense of "an artist's jointed model.”This was the sense in which we adopted the word (first recorded in 1570),another term likeeasel and landscape that was taken over from the terminology of Dutch painters of the time. The word borrowed from Dutch now has the formmanikin. We later adopted the French version of the Dutch word as well, giving Englishmannequin. Mannequinis considered to be first recorded in a dictionary published from 1730 to 1736 or in 1902,depending on whether one regards early forms showing French influence as variants ofmanikin or as representations of a new word. In any event, mannequin is now the form most commonly encountered and the one commonly used for a department store dummy as well as a live model. 不论如何,mannequin 一词现在已经是最为常见的形式了, 通常用来表示百货商店里的人体模型或真人模特〔case〕The form of such an inflected word.变形词:这样一个词形发生屈折变化的词的形式〔form〕The external aspect of words with regard to their inflections, pronunciation, or spelling:字的形式变化:因词形、发音或拼写变化的一个词的不同形体之一:〔person〕Any of the different forms or inflections expressing these distinctions.表示某人称的词形:表示这些区别的不同的形式或变化〔alligator〕InThe Travailes of an Englishman, published in 1568, Job Hortop says that "in this river we killed a monstrous Lagarto or Crocodile.”This killing gives rise to the first recorded instance ofalligator in English, obviously in a different form from the one familiar to modern speakers.Alligator, which comes to us from Spanish el lagarto, "the lizard,” was modified in pronunciation and form in several ways before taking on the formalligator. Such changes, referred to by linguists as taboo deformation, are not uncommon in a name for something that is feared and include, for example, the change in sequence of ther and t that occurred between el lagarto and alligator. An interesting parallel case iscrocodile, which appears in Spanish, for example, ascocodrilo, with a similar difference in the sequence of the r. The earliest recorded form ofalligator that is similar to ours appears in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (First Folio, 1623): "In his needie shop a tortoyrs hung,/An Allegater stuft.”
