Thebut of cannot but, however, means "except,” as it does in phrases such asno one but, while thebut of can but has the sense only, as it does in the sentenceWe had but a single bullet left. Bothcannot but and can but are established as standard expressions. · The constructioncannot help is used with a present participle to roughly the same effect as cannot but in a sentence such as We cannot help admiring his courage. But this construction is generally restricted to contextsin which a person is unable to affect an outcome that would normally be under his or her control. It would be more precise to sayWith all the public interest in the affair, the book cannot but attract the attention of reviewers (or . . . can but gain . . . )than to say the book cannot help attracting the attention of reviewers, which suggests that the book might have had a say in the matter. · The constructioncannot help but probably arose as a blend of cannot help and cannot but; it has the meaning of the first and the syntax of the second: 习语cannot but 有时候被判定为一种双重否定, 这也许是因为它已混淆于can but 。 然而cannot but 中的 but 表示“除了”, 就如用在象no one but 这样的短语中一样, 而can but 中的 but 意思却是 only(只有) , 就如用在我们只剩下了一颗子弹 中那样。 cannot but 和 can but 都已被确定为标准的表达法。 cannot help 结构与现在分词同用的作用和 我们禁不住钦佩他的勇气 一句中的 cannot but 大致相同。 但这一结构通常只限于这种情况,即一个人在该情况下不能实现正常情况下处于他或她控制之下的结果。由于公众对该事件的浓厚兴趣,这本书理所当然地引起了评论家的注意 (或 …can but gain… )的说法比暗示这本书在此事中想必有决定权的 这本书情不自禁地吸引了评论家的注意 说法要更为精确。 cannot help but 也许是来自 cannot help 和 cannet but 的混合; 它具有前者的意思和后者的句法结构: 〔sunbeam〕The period of European history from the 5th to the 11th century, although often called the Dark Ages,in fact did much to preserve and extend the light of civilization. One of the relatively minor contributions of the time, albeit a fortunate one for us, is the addition of the wordsunbeam to the English language. The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔affect〕The adverse criticism the book received didn't affect the author one way or another.对这本书的敌对性评论丝毫没有影响该作家。〔detective〕The first detective may have come into existence before the word itself.C. Auguste Dupin, Edgar Allan Poe's hero in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” which is considered the world's first real detective story, was introduced to the world in 1841.Nine years later we find the first recorded instance of the worddetective, although the phrases detective police and detective policeman, from which it was shortened, are recorded first in 1843. Hence, Dupin precedes all recorded instances ofdetective, just as he precedes all other detectives.第一个侦探在“侦探“这个词出现以前就出现了。C·奥古斯·杜平,埃德加·爱波·伦的小说《莫格街谋杀案》(这本书被认为是世界上第一本真正的侦探小说)中的主人公,在1841年被介绍给全世界。虽然词条detective police 和 detective policeman (detective就是这两者的缩写)首次被记载是在1843年,但九年后,我们才找到对 detective 这个词的第一次记载。 迄今为止,杜平最早记载detective , 正如他就是最早的侦探一样〔date〕Pictures of old cars date the book.旧式汽车的图片使这本书看起来很旧〔noticeable〕A new theory of the origin of language is the most prominent feature of the book.关于语言起源的新理论是这本书显著的一个特点。〔boring〕I had expected the book to be boring, but on the contrary it was fascinating. What ismonotonous bores because of lack of variety: 我本以为这本书很乏味,但正好相反,它竟让人着迷。 表示monotonous 的东西令人厌烦是因为缺少变化: 〔contain〕The book contains some amusing passages.这本书里有一些有趣的章节。〔tendency〕not openly liberal, but that is the tendency of the book.虽然没有公开的自由,但这是这本书的倾向〔regrettably〕Regrettably, the book is not available.很遗憾,这本书还没有货〔guarantee〕I guarantee that you'll like this book.我管保你会喜欢这本书〔see〕Persons interested in the book's history should see page one of the preface.对这本书的历史感兴趣者可参阅前言的第一页 |
