释义 | 〔powerful〕In the upper southern United States the wordspowerful and mighty are intensives used frequently like the adverb very : Your boy's grown powerful big.The new baby is mighty purty.Powerfulis used as an adjective in some expressions: The storm did a powerful lot of harm. In the same dialect regionthe nounpower has, in addition to its standard meaning, the sense of "a large number or amount.”This sense appears in theOxford English Dictionary as common in dialectal British English of the 18th and 19th centuries: "It has done a power of work" (Charles Dickens). All these derivative senses ofpower and might take advantage of the notion of strength inherent in these nouns, making them natural intensives. Colloquial English is always on the lookout for ways to make language more vivid with new intensives. We think of the upper southern part of the United States as linguistically conservative, but in fact it has preserved uses ofpower, powerful, and mighty that were innovative in their time. 我们认为美国中南部在语言的使用上是很保守的,但事实上,这部分地区却保留了在当时十分创新的power, powerful 及 mighty 的用法 〔tail〕The posterior part of an animal, especially when elongated and extending beyond the trunk or main part of the body.尾:一个动物的后部,尤指当这部分呈细长状并伸至躯干或身体的主要部分以外时〔wood〕This tissue, often cut and dried especially for use as building material and fuel.木材:这部分组织经常砍倒并晾干,特别供建筑材料和燃料用〔offertory〕A musical setting for this part of the liturgy.奉献乐曲:为这部分礼拜仪式而设的背景音乐〔arena〕Fans watching contact sports such as boxing, hockey, or football in modern arenas might be struck by the connection between the wordarena and the notion of gladiatorial combat. This word is from Latinharēna (also spelled arēna ), "sand.” Harēna then came to mean the part of a Roman amphitheater that was covered with sand to absorb the blood spilled by the combatants.Arena is first recorded in English during the 17th century, denoting this area of a Roman amphitheater. 在现代剧场中观看接触运动如拳击、曲棍球或足球的爱好者们可能会发现单词arena 与竞技搏斗概念的关系。 这个单词来源于拉丁语harena (也拼作 arena) ,“沙地”。 Harena 后来便意指着罗马圆形剧场的一部分, 它由沙覆盖以吸收竞技斗士溅出的鲜血。Arena 在17世纪首次记入英语,意指罗马圆形竞技场的这部分 〔popliteal〕Of or relating to the hollow part of the leg behind the knee joint.膝后弯的:位于腿的膝关节后方之中空部分的,与这部分有关的〔lumbar〕Of, near, or situated in the part of the back and sides between the lowest ribs and the pelvis.腰部的:最低的肋骨与盆骨之间与后背处的部分的,或靠近这部分的,或位于这个部位的〔fanjet〕A jet engine that provides extra thrust by means of a ducted fan in its forward end that draws in extra air.涡轮风扇发动机:一种喷气发动机,前有一管道风扇吸入额外量的空气,这部分空气经压缩后提供额外推力 |
