On the other hand, scientific skill and cunning unambiguously in the service of hope"(Charles Krauthammer)“现代医学道德上互相对立的两极:一方面是生育技术的改进造成模棱两可,甚至可怕的道德混淆,另一方面却是科学的技术和方法能实现你的愿望”(查尔斯·克劳萨默)〔blatant〕 Certain contexts may admit either word depending on what is meant:a violation of international law might be eitherblatant or flagrant. But writers who refer tothe blatant torturing of animals or the flagrant liberal bias of the media have implied something other than what they presumably intended. In the first case, the writer is probably more troubled by the enormity of the mistreatment of animals than by the failure to conceal it,so thatflagrant would have been the better choice. In the second case, by contrast, the writer probably wants to draw attention to a moral failing in the media's unapologetic refusal to hide its bias, rather than to the iniquity of the bias itself,an implication that would have been conveyed more successfully byblatant. Blatant should not be used to mean simply "obvious,”as inthe blatant danger of such an approach. 但是提到the blatant torturing of animals(肆无忌惮地虐待动物) 或者 the flagrant liberal bias of the media(媒体公然的、不严谨的偏见) 的作者已经暗示了他们本来意图以外的意思。 Blatant 不应仅仅表示“明显的”,就象在the blatant danger of such an approach(这种方法明显的危险性)中。 〔virtue〕Moral excellence and righteousness; goodness. 一位在道德上有缺陷的政客〔savory〕Morally respectable; inoffensive:体面的:道德上值得尊敬的;不冒犯别人的:〔philosophy〕Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.对智慧的热爱与追求:通过智力途径和道德上的自律来达到对智慧的热爱与追求〔lapse〕A moral fall:道德上的堕落:〔remorse〕Moral anguish arising from repentance for past misdeeds; bitter regret.See Synonyms at penitence 痛悔:因对过去的不良行为的后悔而产生的道德上的痛苦;深深的悔恨 参见 penitence〔decency〕Social or moral proprieties.行为准则:社交上或道德上的规矩〔speak〕"On an occasion of this kind it becomes more than a moral duty to speak one's mind.It becomes a pleasure" (Oscar Wilde). “在这样的场合下,说出自己的心里话不仅是道德上的责任,也是一种乐趣” (奥斯卡·王尔德)。 〔conscience〕The awareness of a moral or ethical aspect to one's conduct together with the urge to prefer right over wrong:良心:对鞭策人行善而非作恶的本能行为在伦理或道德上的意识:〔wrong〕To go astray morally.堕落:道德上的堕落〔material〕"the moral and material welfare of all good citizens"(Theodore Roosevelt)“所有优秀市民的道德上和实质上的好处”(西奥多·罗斯福)〔warp〕A mental or moral twist, aberration, or deviation. 正派的:道德上正直的;值得尊敬的〔strong〕 Tough suggests physical or moral strength to resist opposition, strain, or hardship: Tough 指抵抗敌对、压力或困难的身体或道德上的力量: 〔moral〕moral scrutiny; a moral quandary.道德上的审查;道德上的两难局面〔moralize〕To think about or express moral judgments or reflections.说教:思考或表达道德上的判断或看法〔Puritanism〕puritanism Scrupulous moral rigor, especially hostility to social pleasures and indulgences: puritanism 道德上的极端拘谨,尤指对社会快乐和放纵的敌视:〔heritage〕a heritage of moral uprightness;道德上正直的传统;〔taint〕A moral defect considered as a stain or spot.See Synonyms at stain 污点:被视为道德上污点的一个缺陷 参见 stain〔strength〕 Strength refers especially to physical, mental, or moral robustness or vigor: Strength 尤指身体的,精神的或道德上的坚强力量或活力: 〔ugly〕Morally reprehensible; bad. 堕落:道德上腐败;变得颓废〔right〕That which is just, morally good, legal, proper, or fitting.正确,正当,公正,正义:公正的、在道德上好的、合法的、合适的或恰当的东西〔sanctify〕To give social or moral sanction to.给予社会或道德上的认可〔disgrace〕Shame suggests mortifying loss of status, such as that which might result from the commission of a moral offense: Shame 意味着因道德上的不轨而失去地位,从而感到羞耻和耻辱: 〔ruin〕Total destruction or disintegration, either physical, moral, social, or economic.毁灭,灭亡:肉体上、道德上、社会上或经济上的完全毁坏或粉碎〔wholesome〕Enjoying or marked by physical, mental, or moral soundness; healthy.See Synonyms at healthy 健康的:拥有身体、心理和道德上的健康的;健康的 参见 healthy〔regenerate〕Spiritually or morally reformed.
