The word is believed to have entered English in the 9th century through the work of the English king Alfred the Great. A scholar as well as a king, Alfred undertook a number of translations of great Latin writings, rendering them into the English of his time, now known as Old English.Among the works translated during Alfred's reign was a store of narratives and information about England's earliest connections with the Church, called theHistoria Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, a work composed by the Venerable Bede. Several times in his book Bede uses the Latin phrasecolumna lucis, which we would today translate as "a column of light.”Since the Old English translator did not have the wordcolumn in his vocabulary, he substituted the word beam, which meant "a tree" or "a building post made from a tree.”Columna lucis thus became sunnebeām, or "sun post,” which survives as our sunbeam. Ifsunbeam is perhaps a less stately expression than "column of light,” it has nevertheless served us well. From it the wordbeam alone came to mean "a ray or rays of light"; it subsequently became a verb meaning "to radiate.”It now allows us not only to beam with pride or happinessbut also to beam our broadcasts to other countries and ourselves, as some would have it, through space.Column would never do. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People Column 可不行 〔annotation〕A critical or explanatory note; a commentary.注文,释文:重要的或解释性的注释;评论〔semantic〕from Greek sēmantikos [significant] 源自 希腊语 sēmantikos [重要的] 〔captain〕A figure in the forefront; a leader:头子:处于最重要的位置的人物;领导:〔trivial〕"I think all Christians . . . agree in the essential articles, and that their differences are trivial, and rather political than religious" (Samuel Johnson).Somethingtrifling is so unimportant or so small as to be scarcely worth notice: “我认为所有的基督徒…在主要问题上的意见是一致的,而他们的分歧都是不重要的,而且往往是政治方面的而非宗教方面的” (塞缪尔·约翰逊)。trifling 指的是某物太小或太不重要以致于几乎不值得注意: 〔Bergen〕A city of southwest Norway on inlets of the North Sea. The sentenceHe has authored a dozen books on the subject was unacceptable to 74 percent of the Usage Panel, probably because it implies that the fact of having a book published is worthy of special lexical distinction, a notion that sits poorly with conventional literary sensibilities, and which seems to smack of press agentry. The sentenceThe Senator authored a bill limiting uses of desert lands in California was similarly rejected by 64 percent of the Panel, though here the usage is common journalistic practice, and is perhaps justified by the observation that we do not expect that legislators will actually write the bills to which they attach their names. ·The verbcoauthor is well established in reference to scientific and scholarly publications, where it serves a useful purpose, since the people listed as authors of such works routinely include research collaborators who have played no part in the actual writing of the text, but who are nonetheless entitled to credit for the published results. In Middle Englishgovernour, the ancestor of governor, meant both "a sovereign ruler" and "a subordinate or substitute ruler.”In the later sense it was a natural term to use for heads of the British colonies in North America as well as elsewhere.During our colonial periodroyal governors were often unpopular, yet the word was not dropped after the Revolutionary Warand in fact was chosen to designate the executive head of a state when the United States of America was created.美国独立战争扫除了英国的许多东西,但却忽略了摒弃一个重要的英国政治术语。governor 这个单词肯定被看作是一个美国官方职务, 因为英国没有这样的官方职务。然而governor 作政权统治者含义在英国有很长的历史。 在中世纪的英语里,governour 是 governor 的前身, 意思是“主权统治者”和“下一级统治者或代理统治者。”用后一个意思来指英国在北美的殖民地或其他地方的首脑是很贴切的。在美国殖民地时期,皇家总督不大为人所知,然而这个词在独立战争以后并没被废除,实际上它被用来指美国建国以后各州的州长了〔pyrolusite〕A soft, black to dark gray mineral, MnO2, the commonest and most important secondary ore of manganese. 软锰矿:一种软的,黑色至灰黑色的矿物质,MnO2,是最普通最重要的锰矿 〔pilgrimage〕A long journey or search, especially one of exalted purpose or moral significance.长途追寻:长途跋涉和追寻,尤指具有崇高目的或重要道德意义的〔bulk〕To be or appear to be massive in terms of size, volume, or importance; loom:显得大或重要:从大小、体积或重要性来看得很巨大或很重要;巨大的:〔zilch〕A person regarded as being insignificant; a nonentity.小人物:被认为是不重要的人;无足轻重的人〔catechol〕A biologically important organic phenol, having two hydroxyl groups attached to the benzene ring.苯磷二酚:生物学上一种重要的有机酚,苯环上有两个羟基群〔leucine〕An essential amino acid, C4H 9CH(NH 2)COOH, derived from the hydrolysis of protein by pancreatic enzymes during digestion and necessary for optimal growth in infants and children and for the maintenance of nitrogen balance in adults. 亮氨酸:一种重要的氨基酸,C4H 9CH(NH 2)COOH,由胰酶在消化过程中从蛋白质的水解作用中分离出来,对婴幼儿良好的生长发育及成人保持氮平衡十分必要 〔myth〕A traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the world view of a people, as by explaining aspects of the natural world or delineating the psychology, customs, or ideals of society:神话;神话故事:一种传统的、通常是古代的故事,它涉及有超自然的生灵、祖先或作为人们世俗目光中重要而典型的英雄人物,如通过解释自然界的方面或描写心理、风俗或社会思想:〔upstart〕A person of humble origin who attains sudden wealth, power, or importance, especially one made immodest or presumptuous by the change; a parvenu.新贵,暴发户:一个出身低贱的人突然获得财富,权力或重要的位置,尤指此种变化后变得不谦虚或放纵无礼的;暴发户〔Lynn〕A city of northeast Massachusetts, a residential and industrial suburb of Boston. They were members of a secret Islamic order originating in the 11th centurywho believed it was a religious duty to harass and murder their enemies. The most important members of the order were those who actually did the killing.Having been promised paradise in return for dying in action, the killers,it is said, were made to yearn for paradise by being given a life of pleasure that included the use of hashish.Hence, the name for the secret order as a whole,ḥaššāšīn, "hashish users.” After passing through French or Italian, the word came into English and is recorded in 1603 with reference to the Moslem assassins. 〔idiom〕"Also important is the uneasiness I've always felt at cutting myself off from my idiom, the American habits of speech and jest and reaction, all of them entirely different from the local variety"(S.J.
