释义 | 〔agnostic〕An agnostic does not deny the existence of God and heaven, for example, but rather holds that one cannot know for certain if they exist or not.The termagnostic was fittingly coined by the 19th-century British scientist Thomas H. Huxley, who believed that only material phenomena were objects of exact knowledge. He made up the word from the prefixa-, meaning "without, not,” as in amoral, and the noun Gnostic. Gnostic is related to the Greek word gnōsis, "knowledge,” which was used by early Christian writers to mean "higher, esoteric knowledge of spiritual things";hence,Gnostic referred to those with such knowledge. In coining the termagnostic, Huxley was considering as "Gnostics" a group of his fellow intellectuals—"ists,” as he called them—who had eagerly embraced various doctrines or theories that explained the world to their satisfaction. Because he was a "man without a rag of a label to cover himself with,”Huxley coined the termagnostic for himself, its first published use being in 1870. 因为赫胥黎“是个没有任何标签来掩饰自己的人”,他为自己创造了agnostic 这个词,1870年这个词首次用于出版物中 〔press〕To take arbitrarily or by force, especially for public use.征用:随意地拿取或强迫征用,尤指为了公用的目的〔jumble〕To mix in a confused way; throw together carelessly:使混乱,杂乱;随意地把…扔到一块儿:〔remark〕To express briefly and casually as a comment.评论:作为评论而简短随意地说〔away〕Freely; at will:无拘束地;随意地:〔lounge〕To pass (time) in a lazy, relaxed, or idle way:闲散度日:懒散地,放松地,随意地打发(时间):〔venture〕By mere chance or fortune; at random.碰巧;胡乱地;随意地〔light〕To treat casually or gingerly.随意地处理或小心翼翼地对待〔noodle〕To improvise music on an instrument in an idle, haphazard fashion.即兴演奏:不拘形式或随意地在乐器上即席或即兴的演奏〔flirt〕The central meaning shared by these verbs is "to deal lightly, casually, or flippantly with someone or something": 这些动词所共有的中心意思是“轻薄地、随意地或轻率地对待某人或某事”: 〔float〕To move from place to place, especially at random.漂移,游荡:尤指随意地从一处移动到另一处〔shuffle〕To dance casually with sliding and tapping steps.跳曳步舞:以一种滑动和敲击的步子随意地跳舞〔sort〕managed to paint the chair after a sort.随意地把椅子画下来〔poke〕To search or look curiously in a desultory manner:随意地寻找:以随意散漫的方式好奇地搜寻或观看:〔cruise〕To go or move along, especially in an unhurried or unconcerned fashion:漫游:缓慢地行进或移动,尤指悠闲随意地漫游: |
