释义 | 〔smell〕To have or emit an unpleasant odor; stink:发臭气:具有或散发着一种令人不快的气味;难闻:〔fume〕Vapor, gas, or smoke, especially if irritating, harmful, or strong.尤指有害、浓烈或难闻的气、汽或烟〔reek〕Reek is a word that can be said to have been degraded by the company that it has kept. The Old English wordrēocan, one of two ancestors of our word, meant "to emit vapor, steam, or smoke,” while the other Old English ancestor,rēcan, meant "to fumigate, expose to smoke,” or "to cause to emit smoke, burn incense.”Burning incense and fumigating are certainly a far cry from the sort of thing now denoted by the verbreek. But at least in one case Old Englishrēocan did mean "to stink,” hardly a surprise when one considers how bad some smoke smells. Middle Englishreken, the descendant of these two Old English words, never meant "to stink,” but it could refer to a stench while meaning "to rise, ascend.”It would seem that the various exhalations of heated persons and animals, of freshly shed blood, and of smoke referred to by Middle Englishreken and its Modern English descendantreek eventually overwhelmed the word, so that as far as concrete senses are concerned, we largely think of it as meaning "to stink.”Reek 这个词可以说是近墨者黑的典型。 中古英语reken 一词可指发热的人和畜的各种呼气、刚流出的鲜血以及烟, 其现代英语传下的词reek 最终覆盖了此词的本来意义, 以致我们一般认为该词的具体意思是“发出难闻的气味”〔cachet〕A kind of wafer capsule formerly used by pharmacists for presenting an unpleasant-tasting drug.胶囊,扁胶剂:一种胶质囊,药剂师用来存放难闻的药〔reek〕A strong, offensive odor; a stench.See Synonyms at stench 臭气:强烈的难闻的气味;臭气 参见 stench〔loud〕Having an offensively strong odor.刺鼻的:有一种难闻的强烈气味的〔high〕Having a bad smell; malodorous.难闻的;恶臭的〔halitosis〕The condition of having stale or foul-smelling breath.口臭:呼吸中发出不新鲜的、难闻的气味〔smell〕This closet smells.这衣柜发出难闻的味道〔ripe〕Emitting a foul odor, especially body odor.刺鼻的,难闻的:发出刺鼻难闻的气味的,尤指体臭〔dirty〕a foul exudation;难闻的渗出物;〔reek〕To give off or become permeated with a strong, unpleasant odor:发出…气味:散发或充满强烈难闻的气味:〔salute〕A foul smell saluted our nostrils.一股难闻的气味扑鼻而来〔slimy〕Vile; foul.令人作呕的;难闻的〔nasty〕Physically repellent.难闻的:引起身体上的厌恶的〔rank〕Strong and offensive in odor or flavor.刺鼻的;难闻的:气味或味道强烈或使人不舒服的〔unsavory〕Not savory:难吃的,难闻的:〔fetor〕An offensive odor; a stench.See Synonyms at stench 恶臭:难闻的味道;臭气 参见 stench〔gamy〕Ill-smelling; rank.恶息难闻的;难闻的〔ozostomia〕Foul-smelling breath; halitosis.口臭:呼出难闻的气味;口臭〔rafflesia〕Any of various parasitic plants of the genusRafflesia of tropical Asia, having small, brownish, scalelike leaves and fleshy, apetalous, foul-smelling flowers of various sizes.
