In one, the verb suggests a psychological empathy with the feelings or experiences of another person,as inMost young readers readily identify (or identify themselves ) with Holden Caulfield. This usage derives originally from psychoanalytic writing, where it has a specific technical sense, but like other terms from that field,it was widely regarded as jargon when introduced into the wider discourse. In particular, critics seized on the fact that in this sense the verb was often used intransitively, with no reflexive pronoun. As Wilson Follett wrote in 1966,"The critic . . . could help restore the true notion in these words if he would give upidentifying at large and resume identifying himself with Ivan Karamazov, Don Quixote, Mary Poppins, or whomever.” In recent years, however, this use ofidentify with without the reflexive has become a standard locution. Eighty-two percent of the Usage Panel accepts the sentenceI find it hard to identify with any of his characters; whereas only 63 percent now accepts this same usage when the reflexive pronoun is used,as inI find it hard to identify myself with any of his characters. · Omission of the reflexive with this use ofidentify serves among other things to distinguish it from use of the verb to mean "to associate (oneself) with the goals, interests, or principles of a group.” This use of the verb can be traced back to the 18th century, but it is now somewhat less acceptable to the Panel than the first sense under discussion:58 percent of the Panel accepts the sentenceShe identified herself with the campaign against drug abuse, and only 40 percent acceptsShe identified with the campaign against drug abuse, where no reflexive pronoun is used. I find it hard to identify myself with any of his characters。 省略反身代词以及其它一些方法,使identify 这种用法区别于它作为动词在“与某个集团的目标、利益或原则相联系”一句中的意思。 它作为动词的用法可追溯到18世纪,不过对于用法专题小组来说它没有第一种解释那样被易于接受:58%的小组成员接受她支持反对滥用药物的运动 这一说法, 只有40%的成员接受不要反身代词的She identified with the campaign against drug abuse 这一说法 〔youthful〕Of, relating to, or characteristic of youth.青年的:青年的、与青年有关的或具有青年特点的〔choirboy〕"They're . . . choirboys—clean, scrubbed nothings—so there's no dramatic or psychological preparation for the explosion of killing"(Pauline Kael)“他们是…好青年——整洁、品行端正。所以对于突然发生的大屠杀没有任何心理上的准备”(保利娜·克尔)〔macaroni〕A well-traveled young Englishman of the 18th and 19th centuries who affected foreign customs.英国花花公子:指18和19世纪游历极广的,醉心于外国风俗的英国青年〔retarget〕federal monies retargeted for youth job training.联邦资金改用作做青年职业培训〔page〕A youth in ceremonial employment or attendance at court.青年服务员:在集会仪式上雇用或待从的青年〔youngster〕A young person; a child or youth.年轻人;孩子或青年〔YWCA〕Young Women's Christian Association.基督教青年妇女协会〔callow〕a callow youth.一个尚未成熟的青年〔chaperon〕An older person who attends and supervises a social gathering for young people.年长监护者:青年社交聚会时在场监护的年长者〔bachelor〕Middle English bacheler [squire, youth, bachelor] 中古英语 bacheler [侍从,青年,独身男子] 〔Narcissus〕A youth who pined away in love for his own image in a pool of water and was transformed into the flower that bears his name.那喀索斯:一个青年由于对水池中自己形象的眷恋而死去,变成一种以他的名字命名的花朵〔deb〕A debutante.首次进入社交界的青年,首次登台的演员(或演讲者)〔debut〕The formal presentation of a young woman to society.首次露面:青年妇女在社交界的正式露面〔stripling〕An adolescent youth.青年:一个年轻人〔Salinger〕American writer whose works, most notably his novelThe Catcher in the Rye (1951), often concern troubled, sensitive adolescents. 塞林格,杰(罗姆)·戴(维):(生于 1919) 美国作家,最著名的作品是《麦田捕手》 (1951年),他的作品常常关于烦恼而敏感的青年 〔Saroyan〕American writer whose works include short stories, such asThe Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze (1934), plays, most notably The Time of Your Life (1939), and novels. 萨罗扬,威廉:(1908-1981) 美国作家,其作品包括短篇小说集如《秋千架上的大胆青年》 (1934年)和戏剧作品,其中最出名的是 《你生活中的好时光》 (1939年)和一些长篇小说 |
