Copacetic has been recorded with the spellings copasetic, copasetty, copesetic, copisettic, and kopasettee. The spelling is now more or less fixed, however, ascopacetic or copasetic, even though the origin of the word has not been determined. The Harlem connection mentioned by O'Hara would seem more likely than the Italian, sincecopacetic was used by Black jazz musicians and is said to have been Southern slang in the late 19th century. Ifcopacetic is Creole French in origin, it would also have a Southern homeland.According to this explanation, copacetic came from the Creole French word coupersètique, which meant "able to be coped with,” "able to cope with anything and everything,” "in good form,”and also "having a healthy appetite or passion for life or love.”Those who support the Hebrew or Yiddish origin ofcopacetic do not necessarily deny the Southern connections of the word. One explanation has it that Jewish storekeepers used the Hebrew phrasekol bĕṣedeq, "all with justice,”when asked if things were O.K. Black children who were in the store as customers or employees heard this phrase ascopacetic. No explanation of the origin ofcopacetic, including the ones discussed here, has won the approval of scholars, as is clearly shown by the etymology ofcopacetic in the first volume of the Dictionary of American Regional English, published in 1985: "Etym unknown.” 在关于copacetic 词源的解释中,包括以上讨论的这些,没有一种得到学者们的认可, 这一点我们可以在美国方言英语辞典 (1985年出版)第一册关于 copacetic 一词的词源解释中清楚地看到:“词源不知” 〔affect〕 Touch usually means to arouse a tender response, such as love, gratitude, or compassion: Touch 通常指激起一种温柔的反应,例如爱,感激或激情〔tout〕To promote or praise energetically; publicize:吹嘘,吹捧:促销或激情洋溢地赞扬;引起公众对…的注意:〔soul〕A strong, deeply felt emotion conveyed by a speaker, a performer, or an artist.激情:演讲者、表演者或艺术家所传送被感觉到的一种强烈的深刻感情〔verve〕The play lacks verve.那场戏缺少激情〔funky〕When asked which words in the English language are the most difficult to define precisely,a lexicographer would surely mentionfunky. The meaning offunky seems well captured by Geneva Smitherman in Talkin and Testifyin: The Language of Black America, where she states that funky means “[related to] the blue notes or blue mood created in jazz, blues, and soul music generally, down-to-earth soulfully expressed sounds; by extension [related to] the real nitty-gritty or fundamental essence of life, soul to the max.”Be that as it may, funky is first recorded in 1784 in a reference to musty, old, moldy cheese. Funky then developed the sense "smelling strong or bad,” which could be used to describe body odor.Butfunky was applied to jazz, too—a usage explained in 1959 by one F. Newton inJazz Scene : "Critics are on the search for something a little more like the old, original, passion-laden blues: the trade-name which has been suggested for it is ‘funky’(literally: ‘smelly,’ i.e. symbolizing the return from the upper atmosphere to the physical, down-to-earth reality).” Funky comes from the earlier nounfunk, which meant "a strong smell or stink.” This noun can probably be traced back to the Latin wordfūmus, "smoke.” 这个词可能可追溯到拉丁词fumus, “烟” 〔captive〕One held in the grip of a strong emotion or passion.着迷的人:受强烈的感情或激情支配的人〔fire〕To arouse the emotions of; make enthusiastic or ardent:激起,唤起:激发热情;使充满热情或激情〔flip〕To react strongly, as with anger or enthusiasm.反应强烈:如带着怒气或激情等强烈地反应〔Wilcox〕American writer whose works include sentimental poetry, such asPoems of Passion (1883), fiction, and spiritual essays. 威尔科克斯,埃拉·惠勒:(1850-1919) 美国作家。她的作品有伤感主义诗歌,如《激情诗集》 (1883年),小说和宗教小品文 〔oversell〕To present with excessive or unwarranted enthusiasm; overpraise.过分吹嘘:充满了过分的、不必要的激情;过分称赞,过奖〔muzzle〕had a muzzle put on their high spirits.遏制他们的激情〔energy〕a speech delivered with energy and emotion.一个充满力量及激情的演说〔infatuation〕A foolish, unreasoning, or extravagant passion or attraction.See Synonyms at love 着迷:愚蠢的,非理性的或过分的激情或迷恋 参见 love〔undercurrent〕"The Gaucho began to talk, calmly but with an undercurrent of passion"(Thomas Pynchon)“这个高卓人开始讲话,平静的表面掩饰着潜化的激情”(托马斯·平琼)〔restrain〕"a light to guide, a rod/To check the erring" (William Wordsworth).Tobridle is often to hold in or govern one's emotions or passions: “一束引路的光,一根/防止犯错误的棍” (威廉·华兹华斯)。Bridle 常指压抑或控制自己的感情或激情〔weep〕To shed (tears) as an expression of emotion:流(泪):流(泪)作为激情的一种表达方式:〔acute〕"a raw, chilling and psychologically acute novel of human passions reduced to their deadliest essence"(Literary Guild Magazine)See Synonyms at sharp “一部不加雕琢,令人不寒而栗并且心理敏锐的小说,反应了人类激情减至其最致命本质”(文学协会杂志) 参见 sharp〔unimpassioned〕Not impassioned; marked by a reasonable approach totally devoid of emotional influence or appeal:没有激情的:没有热情的;以完全没有激情影响或要求的合理方法为标志的:〔energy〕Vitality and intensity of expression:充满活力和激情的表述:〔dispassionate〕Devoid of or unaffected by passion, emotion, or bias.See Synonyms at fair 1不动感情的;不带偏见的:没有或不受激情、感情或私心影响的 参见 fair1〔Kramer〕American filmmaker whose dramatic, emotionally charged works, includingThe Defiant Ones (1958) and Inherit the Wind (1960), often concern social conflicts, such as racism and religious prejudice. 克雷默,斯坦利E.:(生于 1913) 美国电影制片人,他的作品充满戏剧性和激情,包括《反抗者》 (1958年)和 《风的遗产》 (1960年),经常关注一些社会矛盾,比如种族主义和宗教偏见 〔verve〕Energy and enthusiasm in the expression of ideas, especially in artistic performance or composition:气势,神韵:在表达思想时的激情和勇气,特别是在文学表演或文章中:〔unharness〕To release or liberate (energy or passions, for example).释放(例如活力或激情〔ripsnorter〕One that is remarkable for strength, intensity, or excellence.非寻常的人,了不起的人(物):因其力量、激情或出众而非同寻常的人〔riot〕An unrestrained outbreak, as of laughter or passions.奔放,放纵:尽情发泄,如笑声或激情的发泄〔move〕To exhibit great activity or energy.展现活力:表现出激情或精力
