Some critics have been puzzled that adverbs such ashardly, rarely, and scarcely should be treated as negatives in the traditional strictures against double negation, which tars sentences likeI couldn't hardly see him with the same brush as I didn't get none. After all, they argue, the sentenceMary hardly laughed entails that Mary did laugh, not that she didn't,and therefore does not express a negative proposition.Buthardly and scarcely occur with other negative expressions in a number of ways. For one thing, they combine with items such asany and at all, which are characteristically associated with negative contexts: we sayI hardly saw him at all or I never saw him at all but notI occasionally saw him at all; we sayI hardly had any time or I didn't have any time but notI had any time, and so on. Like other negative adverbs, hardly triggers inversion of the subject and auxiliary when it begins a sentence. Thus we sayHardly had I arrived when she left, on the pattern of Never have I read such a book or At no time has he condemned the movement. Such inversion is not used with other adverbs:we would not sayOccasionally has he addressed this question or To a slight degree have they changed their position. The fact is that adverbs such ashardly are semantically negative in that they qualify a state or an event relative to the limiting case of nonoccurrence. Thus the meaning ofhardly is, roughly, "almost not at all"; the meaning ofrarely is "practically never"; and so forth. These adverbs are felt to have a negative component in their meaning, and it should not be surprising that grammarians have reacted to combinations ofhardly with negatives in the same way that they have reacted to combinations of pairs of negatives such as not and none. See Usage Note at double negative ,rarely ,scarcely Hardly 和一个否定词在一起的用法在标准英语中应尽量避免, 一些批评学家一直怀疑象hardly, rarely 和 scarcely 这样的副词在传统的双重否定的句中应被视为否定词, 这样的词使句子象I couldn't hardly see him 和 I didn't get none 一样被弄糟了, 他们争论说,毕竟句子Mary hardly laughed 的意思是玛丽的确笑了, 而不是她没笑,所以不表示否定的建议。但是hardly 和 scarcely 和其他的否定表示一起在许多方面出现, 举例说,他们和象any 和 at all 这样独特的和否定上下文联系的条目组合在一起, 我们说I hardly saw him at all 或 I never saw him at all , 但并不是I occasionally saw him at all; 我们说I hardly had any time 或 I didn't have any time 但不是I had any time 等。 象其它否定副词,hardly 在句子开头时引起主语和助动词的倒装, 于是我们说Hardly had I arrived when she left, 和 Never have I read such a book 或 At no time has he condemned the movement. 等同样的句型。 别的副词并不用这样的倒装:我们不能说Occasionally has he addressed this question 或 To a slight degree have they changed their position 。 事实是象hardly 这样的副词语义上是否定的, 他们限定修饰了与不发生有关的状态或事件。于是hardly 的意思大概是“几乎根本不”; rarely 的意思大概是“实际上没有”;等等。 这些副词在他们的意思里留有否定的成分,语法学家们对hardly 和否定词组合的反应和对一对否定词如 not 和 none组合的反应一样是不足为奇的 参见 double negative, rarely, scarcely〔choice〕Preferred above others of the same kind or set:优先选择的:在同一类或同一组中比别的更受欢迎的:〔Moldavia〕A historical region of eastern Romania east of Transylvania. Part of the Roman province of Dacia, it became a principality in the 14th century and passed to the Ottoman Empire in 1504, although it was continually attacked and often virtually controlled by numerous other powers. In 1859 Moldavia united with Walachia to form the nucleus of modern Romania.摩尔达维亚:在罗马尼亚东部特兰西瓦尼亚东部的一个历史上著名的地区。作为达契亚的罗曼省的一部分,它在14世纪成为一个公国,并于1504年让与了奥斯曼帝国,尽管它频繁地受袭击并经常实际上为大量别的力量控制。在1859年,摩尔达维亚和瓦拉几亚联合形成了现在罗马尼亚的核心〔nauseous〕Traditional critics have insisted thatnauseous is appropriately used only to mean "causing nausea" and that it is incorrect to use it to mean "affected with nausea,”as inRoller coasters make me nauseous. In this example, nauseated is preferred by 72 percent of the Usage Panel. What is curious, however,is that 88 percent of the Panelists indicated that they would prefernauseating in the sentenceThe children looked a little green from too many candy apples and nauseous rides. Thus it appears that like a handful of other words such astranspire, nauseous is actively used mainly in the sense in which it is considered incorrect. · While the use ofnauseous to mean "affected with nausea" may incur critical displeasure, it should be pointed out in its defense not only that it is quite common among educated speakersbut that it is subtly distinct fromnauseated in this sense. Nauseated is a passive participle, and hence suggests a condition induced by a specific external cause.By contrast, nauseous is an adjective that refers to an occurrent state whose cause may be nonspecific or unknown. The person who reports thatI woke up this morning feeling nauseous might not be willing to accept that he or she had beennauseated by any external agent. 声称我早上起来时感到恶心 的人, 可能不情愿接受他或她被任何外界力量所恶心到 〔mouton〕Often used to modify another noun:常用来修饰别的名词:〔severe〕"Be systematically ascetic . . . do . . . something for no other reason than that you would rather not do it" (William James).有计划地克制…做…某事,没有别的理由只因你最好别做它” (威廉·杰姆森)。〔earmark〕An identifying mark on the ear of a domestic animal.耳戳:打在家畜耳部的便于识别的记号〔answer〕Something markedly similar to another of the same class:符合:与同一类别的另一个相似:〔translate〕To express in different words; paraphrase.说明:用别的词表示;释义〔outline〕saw the dark silhouette of the family waving farewell. 看见挥手道别的那一家人的黑色剪影 〔write〕To trace or form letters, words, or symbols on paper or another surface.写:在纸上或别的表面篆写或形成字母、单词或符号〔hamburger〕Often used to modify another noun:通常用来修饰别的名词:〔check〕To inspect so as to determine accuracy, quality, or other condition; test:检查:为确定准确性、质量或别的情况而进行检查;测试:〔lacquer〕Any of various clear or colored synthetic coatings made by dissolving nitrocellulose or other cellulose derivatives together with plasticizers and pigments in a mixture of volatile solvents and used to impart a high gloss to surfaces.漆:任一种纯色或有色的合成涂料,是由硝酸纤维素或别的纤维素涂料的衍生品与增塑剂和颜料混合在一起形成的一种挥发性溶剂,用来给表面增加高度光滑性〔tune〕"Nobody tunes in to what anybody else is saying"(Bruce Allen)“没有人注意别的人在说什么”(布鲁斯·艾伦)〔ringtoss〕A game in which players toss rings at a stake so as to encircle it or come closer to it than the other players.套圈圈:一种游戏,玩家要把圈圈掷向一根棒子,来套住它或比别的玩家更接近它〔storage〕Often used to modify another noun:常用来修饰别的名词:〔many〕many a child; many another day.许多孩子;许多别的日子〔immigrate〕To enter and settle in a country or region to which one is not native.See Usage Note at migrate 移民:进入并定居于不是某人本土的别国或别的地区 参见 migrate〔someplace〕"I didn't care where I was from so long as it was someplace else"(Garrison Keillor)See Usage Note at everyplace “只要是别的一个地方,我就不在乎我是从哪儿来的”(加里森·谢勒) 参见 everyplace〔unnameable〕Not to be named or identified:无以名状的:不能说出其名称或予以识别的〔bond〕A duty, a promise, or another obligation by which one is bound.义务:加在某人身上的责任、承诺或别的义务〔handicapped〕Althoughhandicapped is widely used in both law and everyday speech to refer to people having physical or mental disabilities, those described by the word tend to prefer the expressionsdisabled or people with disabilities. To say that people arehandicapped may imply that they cannot function on a par with others, while to say that they have adisability allows more readily for the possibility that they can so function, in spite of having to do some things in different ways.It is also felt that some stigma may attach to the wordhandicapped on account of its origin in the phrase hand in cap, actually derived from a game of chancebut sometimes mistakenly believed to involve the image of a beggar. The wordhandicapped is best reserved to describe a disabled person who is unable to function owing to some property of the environment. Thus people with a physical disability requiring a wheelchair may or may not behandicapped, depending on whether wheelchair ramps are made available to them.
