It is thought, however, that Old Englishloppestre, the ancestor of lobster, was formed from locusta and the suffix-estre used to make agent nouns (our -ster ). The change from Latinlocusta to Old English loppestre may have been influenced by Old English loppe, meaning "spider.” 龙虾和蝗虫的名字可能源于同一出处,即拉丁词Locusta , 它用于指蝗虫,也用于表示可能是一种龙虾的甲壳类动物。我们可以看到,Locusta 可能是 locusa 的来源, 但不象是lobster 的来源。 但是,lobster 在古英语里的前身 loppestre 被认为是由 locusta 形成的, 后缀-estre 用于组成代理者的名词(现在的 -soer )。 从拉丁文locusta 到古英语 loppstre 的变化可能受古英语 loppe 的影响(意为“蜘蛛”) 〔put〕"Many status games seem designed to put down others"(Alvin F. Perhaps this usage sounds most at home in these industries.在娱乐与广告业中,concept 通常不很严格地指“一个设计、计划”, 例如这个体育馆好象是专门为展示和推动这种新活动而设计的。 可能在这种行业里的用法听起来更地道〔ditto〕Ditto, which at first glance seems a handy and insignificant sort of word, actually has a Roman past, for it comes fromdictus, "having been said,” the past participle of the verbdīcere, "to say.” In Italiandīcere became dire anddictus became detto, or in the Tuscan dialect ditto. Italiandetto or ditto meant what said does in English, as in the locution "the said story.”Thus in a construction such asDecember 22 the worddetto or ditto could be used by itself instead of the month nameat the next mention of a date in the same month, for example,26 detto. The first recorded use (1625) ofditto occurs in English in such a construction. The sense "copy" is an English development, first recorded in 1818. Ditto has even become a trademark for a duplicating machine, something that has not happened tosaid yet. “复制”这一词义是在英语中发展起来的,最早的记录在1818年, Ditto 甚至成了复印机的商标,而said 还没有 〔buffet〕A blow or cuff with or as if with the hand.殴打:用手或象是用手的殴打〔binge〕"The story is like a fever dream that a disturbed and imaginative city-dweller might have after binging on comics"(Lloyd Rose)“这故事象是一群失去控制的、富于想象力的城市居民在放纵嘻闹之后做的狂热之梦”(劳埃德·罗斯)〔like〕They are as like as two siblings.他们象是亲兄弟〔dispensation〕An exemption or a release from an obligation or a rule, granted by or as if by an authority.免除责任:由官方授权或好象是官方授权的义务或规定的豁免或免除〔dynamite〕To blow up, shatter, or otherwise destroy with or as if with dynamite.破坏:用或象是用炸弹破坏、爆炸或其他形式的破坏〔lather〕To spread with or as if with lather.以泡沫覆盖:通过或好象是通过肥皂泡来扩散〔daughter〕A woman considered as if in a relationship of child to parent:某国家的妇女:被认为好象是处于孩子同父母关系的女子:〔shall〕You and she shall leave tomorrow is likely to be interpreted as a command. 你和她明天将离开则特别象是一个命令。 〔handle〕He handles an ax like a born woodsman.他使起斧子就象是一个天生在森林中居住的人。〔earnest〕"Both sides are deeply in earnest, with passions that approximate those of civil war"(Conor Cruise O'Brien)“双方都很坚决认真,象是鼓足劲要打一场内战”(康纳·克鲁斯·奥布赖恩)〔be〕Traditional grammar requires the nominative form of the pronoun in the predicate of the verbbe : It is I (not me ); That must be they (not them ), and so forth. Even literate speakers of Modern English have found the rule difficult to conform to,but the stigmatization ofIt is me is by now so deeply lodged among the canons of correctness that there is little likelihood that the construction will ever be entirely acceptable in formal writing.Adherence to the traditional rule in informal speech, however, has come to sound increasingly pedantic, and begins to sound absurd when the verb is contracted, as inIt's we. · The traditional rule creates particular problems when the pronoun followingbe also functions as the object of a verb or preposition in a relative clause, as in It is not them/they that we have in mind when we talk about "crime in the streets" nowadays, where the plural pronoun serves as both the predicate ofis and the object of have. In this example, 57 percent of the Usage Panel preferred the nominative formthey, 33 percent preferred the accusativethem, and 10 percent accepted both versions. But H.W. Fowler, like other authorities, argued that the use of the nominative here is an error caused by "the temptation . . . to assume, perhaps from hearingIt is me corrected to It is I, that a subjective [nominative] case cannot be wrong after the verb to be. ” Writers can usually find a way to avoid this problem: They are not the ones we have in mind, We have someone else in mind, and so on. See Usage Note at I 1we 传统语法要求系动词谓语中的代词用主格形式be : It is I (而不是 me ); That must be they (而不是 them ),等等。 I1we〔pillow〕To rest on or as if on a pillow.以…为枕:把头枕在或象是枕在枕垫上〔camp〕To live in or as if in a camp; settle:宿营:住在或象是住在营篷里;暂住:〔eat〕To produce by or as if by eating:啮食成…:啮或象是侵蚀而成:〔telescope〕To slide inward or outward in or as if in overlapping cylindrical sections:叠缩:交搭的圆柱部分或好象是交搭的圆柱部分向里或向外滑动: |
